Khritankov A.M., Ovodo v N.D . 2001. Longevity of Brandt' s bat s ( Myoti s brandtii Eversmann) in Centra l Siberia. - Plecotus et al. 4: 20-24. High longevity of Myotis brandtii in Siberia has been already reported (Ovodov et al. 1990). At that time, some males were 25-26 years old. Fo r the last decade we have gathered new dat a on longevity records in Brandt' s bat . The Biryusa karst area where markin g bat s has been being carried out is situated 50 km nort h of Krasnoyarsk . Slopes of th e river valley (now a bay of Krasnoyars k reservoir) abound in limestone exposures and caves. Surrounding landscape is represented with mixed light taiga forest an d scarce steppe-like patches . Fo r mor e tha n 30 years , ca. 3000 individuals of 6 ba t species (M. daubentonii, M. dasycneme, A/, brandtii, Eptesicus nilssonii, Plecotus auritus, Murina leucogaster) have been bande d in caves of th e Biryusa karst area. M. brandtii dominate d in hibernaculae: 1544 individuals of this species were bande d from 1962 to 1976, an d 398 returns have been obtained . Amon g Brandt' s bat s recapture d in 1989-2000, ther e were 12 individuals (all males) tha t attaine d 26 years and mor e (Table 1). Th e male caugh t in September 2000, 38 years after marking with a ring X-148542, should be considered a record-holder amon g long-living individuals. The male looked like its neighbours and weighed 8 g which is norma l for adult specimens of this species at th e beginning of hibernation. Only th e toot h condition betrayed its extreme old age: lower canines were strongly worn, on e of upper canines was absent, an d premolar s were blunted so tha t they became almost invisible. Table 2 gives information abou t numbe r of Brandt' s bat s tha t ha d been bande d in Biryusa caves from 1962 to 1979 an d reache d th e old age. In total , 65 individuals have carried their rings 14 to 38 years. It should be mentioned tha t all th e individuals of old age were males.

In Cental Siberia, hibernation of bats lasts from early September to May, sometimes to mid-June. This fact may partly explain high longevity of M. brandtii there. In Leningrad region (European part of Russia), however, such a longevity has not been observed in Brandt's bats though the phenology of their hibernation is similar to that near Krasnoyarsk. Hibernation conditions in caves of Central Siberia seem to be especially favourable for this bat species.
