INTRODUCTION

   The handbook of programs of general courses is composed for students of the historical faculty of Moscow State University. Programs are developed by professors and teachers of MSU according to state educational standards for higher professional education (specialization: 020700) and the educational plan of the faculty.  These programs are defined by copyright law and any use of them outside of Moscow State University or reprinting of them in any form is allowed only in such cases as the source of said material be prominently noted, and by agreement with the primary publishers (i.e. the MSU Faculty of History).

   Programs reflect the orientation of the faculty on the fundamental character of students' education as the basis for professional training.  They include subjects which are obligatory for all students of the faculty and do not vary according to the students' chosen specializations. Every program is accompanied by a list of reccomended base source materials and literature.

   This handbook is the first edition of a series of programs of educational courses; it does not include programs of obligatory socio-economical, general mathematics, and natural sciences disciplines, neither disciplines on specializations.

   Later editions will include programs and annotations on seminars in general courses, special disciplines, special courses, and special seminars in the section of History and the section of the History of Art.

   According to the educational plan of the section of History, all students must study the following subjects:

1st Course:

Fundamentals of Archaeology, Fundamentals of Ethnology, History of the Primitive Society, History of Russia before the 19th Century, History of the Ancient East, Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, History of Ancient and Western Eurpoean Philosophy, History of Western Art, History of Russian Art, Latin Language, Foreign Languages, Physical Training.

2nd Course:

History of Russia in the 19th and Early 20th Centuries, History of the Middle Ages, History of Asia and Africa in the Middle Ages, History of Russian Philosophy, Economic Theory, Quantitative Methodology in Historical Research, Information Sciences and Mathematics, Rhetorical Arts, Foreign Languages, Physical Training, First Aid.

3rd Course:

Russian History in the 20th Century, History of European and American Countries (mid 1600s-1918), History of Asia and Africa in the Modern Period, Information Science and Mathematics, Foreign Languages.

4th Course:

Contemporary History of Europe and America, History of Southern and Western Slavs (6th century - late 20th century), Methodological Problems of Historical Research, Foreign Languages.

5th Course:

The Methodology of Teaching History.

* With the second or third course, specialization in the departments begins.

* All students are required to participate in extra-curricular practicums.

* Students of the fifth course of the Historical Faculty must prepare a diploma composition.

   Courses on the history of Asia and Africa in the Middle Ages, Modern and Contemporary periods are taught by teachers from the Asian and African Studies Institute (located at MGU).  Programs are published yearly.
