Biophysics (or biological physics) is an interdisciplinary science studing physical and physico-chemical mechanisms of biological processes. Living systems at all levels of organization -- from molecules to cells, organisms, populations and ecosystems -- are objects of biophysical research. Biophysics interacts with biochemistry, molecular biology, physiology, systems biology, nanotechnology and bioengineering. Biophysical methods are widely applied in medicine, agriculture and environmental and ecological monitoring. Biophysics Department of Biological Faculty, Lomonosov Moscow State University, was founded by Prof. Boris N. Tarusov in 1953. It was the world first educational institution in the field of biophysics. Its academic backbone was formed by leading specialists in biophysics, radiobiology, photochemistry and biophotonics: Alexander A. Krasnovskiy, Alexander N. Terenin, Gleb M. Frank, Alexander M. Kuzin. Nowadays it's one of the leading research and educational centers on biophysics. Its staff includes 25 Full Professors and about 40 Ph.D. scientists. Head of the Department is Corresponding Member of Russian Academy of Sciences Prof. Andrey B. Rubin. The program of biophysical education covers 5 academic years (academic year at MSU starts in September and ends in June). Applicants are admitted according to the results of entrance exams. Educational program includes lectures, seminars and practical trainings on most of biological and physical disciplines, chemistry, and mathematics. Over 25 special courses cover areas of biophysics: · theoretical and molecular biophysics, · biophysics of cellular and membrane processes, · biophysics of photobiological processes, · radiation biophysics, · medical biophysics, and · ecological biophysics. All courses are delivered in Russian. Students of the department are engaged in summer practical work at MSU biological stations near Zvenigorod and at the White Sea, in Puschino Scientific Center, and in a number of research institutes of Russian Academy of Sciences. Biophysics Department of Biological Faculty of MSU provides top-class qualification to young scientists for their work in the field of fundamental and applied biophysics.
