The DOS-system access information on 162 experimen-tal studies carried out from 1962 to 1994. The database includes 6,174 runs with more than 8,300 coexisting phase compositions. The main options include:
(1) configurating INFOREX,
(2) current state information,
(3) updating and editing files,
(4) selection of run conditions,
(5) setting phase assemblages of interest and their search,
(6) export/import operations,
(7) calculations of mineral-melt geothermometers to be used in COMAGMAT simulations.

This is the basic DOS-version of INFOREX distributed since 1997. It accesses information on 235 experimental studies carried out from 1962 to 1996, including 8,660 individual runs and over 11,370 coexisting phase compositions for 36 minerals plus glass. Now the database accesses 290 works containing as much as 15,000 phase compositions from 10,500 experiments. The INFOREX interface is left without changes. Request by e-mail ariskin@geokhi.ru. It is free of charge for the users who have purchased INFOREX.
OTHER NOTES

(1) The INFOREX database with its built-in procedures of processing experimental information is a powerful tool for petrological and geochemical investigations. Using the system one can search for any kind of subliquidus runs for several seconds, and the user who is experienced at utilizing the INFOREX environment may have only few hours to develop and test the most accurate mineral-melt geothermometers for multiphase assemblages.
(2) Unfortunately, the INFOREX system is being introduced into petrological research at an unreasonably slow pace (at present, it is distributed mostly in Russia). Many scientists still tend to use phase equilibria models to solve igneous petrology problems without testing those computing procedures. So, that the question of the accuracy and applicability of these programs to natural objects is commonly regarded as the developer's responsibility. Such an approach to phase equilibria modeling appears to be inadequate.
(3) We believe that any direct application of computer models to natural rocks and minerals should be done only after those programs are tested on experimental data covering the range of magma compositions that is of interest to each particular petrologist and geochemist. To accomplish this goal the INFOREX system offers excellent opportunities.
