He graduated from High School N. 471 in Moscow in 1967, from the Department of Philology of Lomonosov Moscow State University in 1973, and from the University's postgraduate program in 1978 in the same department. In 1984 he defended his candidate dissertation, and in 1995, his doctoral dissertation, following which in 1996 he was awarded the title of professor. Positions: From 1988 to 1994 he was the head of the French Language Department at the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. From 1997 to 2003 he was the head of the Italian Language Section, founded by him as part of the Foreign Languages Department at Lomonosov Moscow State University. Since 2003 he has been chairman of the Department of Semiotics and the General Theory of History, founded by him, the first of its kind in Europe. Since 2001 he has been the dean of the Faculty of Arts at Lomonosov Moscow State University. Scientific interests: A.P. Lobodanov is a well-known scientist and researcher in the field of the history of various languages and the theory of culture and art. He is the author of over 90 research books, among which are six monographic works ("On the History of Philological Thought and Practice in Italy in the 15th and 16th Centuries", Moscow, 1995; "Research in the Realm of Old French Language", Moscow, 1996; "The History of Early Italian Lexicography", Moscow, 1998; "Unapplied Arts", Moscow, 2006; "Foundations of Semiotics: The Semiotics of Art", Moscow, 2007; "Language, Literature, Art", Moscow, 2009) as well as seven textbooks. His works have been published in Russia, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Lebanon, and Japan in Russian, Italian, and French. He has prepared six Doctors of Art and six Candidates of Art for graduation. In 1998 he was chosen as a foreign member of ASLI, which is affiliated with the Crusca Academy in Florence, Italy, and since 2000 he has been a professor on a contract basis at the University of Bologna (Italy). In 2002 he was chosen to be an active member of the Petrovskaya Academy of the Sciences and the Arts (St. Petersburg). He has lectured in numerous cities in Russia, as well as at the universities of Rome, Bologna, Florence, and Buffalo (USA), and in Germany. He has been awarded medals of the order "For Service to the Motherland" of the Second Degree (2005) and of the order M.V. Lomonosov (2008).

Department of Semiotics and the General Theory of Arts
The Department of Semiotics and the General Theory of Arts is a theoretical department. The dean of the Faculty of Arts, Professor of Philology Alexander P. Lobodanov, manages this department. In the bachelor's degree program there are such lectures as "The General Theory of Arts," "The Sociology of Art," "Integrative Art Science" (a part of "The History of the Fine Arts"), "The Expert Analysis of Art Works", "Semiotics of Choreographic Style", "Semiotics of Architecture", "Semiotics of a Suit", "The Theory of Sign Ensembles", "History", "History of the Fatherland", "History of Moscow University". The department offers courses leading to a master's degree: "The General Theory of Art", "Methodology of Teaching the Realistic Figure", "Philosophy of Art", "Phenomenology of Art", "Morphology of Art", "Esthetics", "Psychology and Pedagogies of Art Creativity". After the end of training in the master's degree program, students take a master's exam.

The following seminars are offered: "The Description and the Analysis of Art Works", "Fine Arts: Ancient World, Antiquity, Middle Ages, Byzantium, Ancient Russia", "Fine Arts: Recent and Contemporary", "The Theory of Style and Form in Art in the 20th Century", "Art of the East", "Collections from Archival Storage", "Philosophy of Language", "Myth and Culture", and others. For students specializing in "The Theory and Practice of the Image", a basic subject is the "figure," including such parts as "The Theory of the Subject Form", "The Subject Form in the Environment", "Color and Form", "Form and Light", "Composition", "The Figure of the Person", "The Composition of a Picture", "Still Life", "Portrait", "Landscape", and "Bases of Monumental Painting". Students also pass courses in graphic design, such as "Semiotics of the Figure" and "Graphic Composition". Teachers and students of the department participate in Russian and international conferences. Students participate in world's fairs (at the AllRussia Exhibition Centre and the Arena) and exhibit their works in the halls of the university and the department. Results of research in the field of semiotics of the arts have been described in Alexander P. Lobodanov's books "Nonapplied Arts" (Moscow, 2006) and "Foundations of Semiotics: The Semiotics of Art" (Moscow, 2007).

Department of Music

The Department of Music was founded in 2003. The department's faculty teaches general lecture courses--"Integrative Artistic Disciplines" (a section of "The History of Musical Art") and "The Basics of Semiotics in Music"-- and also provides specialized courses in the history, theory, and practice of music as well as classes in performance specializations (for vocalists, pianists, and composers). One of the most important activities in the department is carrying out musicological research on authentic music theory and performance interpretation. The Department of Music was established as part of the Faculty of Arts within Moscow State University to create a new model for university music education. Aimed at preparing specialists in the fields of scholarship, art, and education, it includes two components: historical-theoretical studies and practical studies (related to performance). Theoretical National artist of Russia Federation studies are closely connected Elena Zimenkova with practical studies. Students wishing to perfect their performing skills receive not only adequate theoretical training but also possibilities for engaging in concert activities. Each student chooses independently the direction of his or her future professional activity. Students who are interested in music history and theory have a sufficient foundation for undertaking scholarly activities after finishing their education. In addition to taking courses in the music disciplines, the students also learn about theater

and the visual arts. This education presents them with opportunities to become specialists with a broad scope. Galina Zadneprovskaya manages this department. The department's faculty members are Honorary Doctor of Art Research T.F. Vladyshevskaya, Doctor of Art Research L.N. Borisova, Honorary Artist of Russia L.P. Kuznetsova, T.A. Shaldybina, A.S. Kuznetsov, G.Yu. Luschevskay. Among the consulting professors is People's Artist of Russia, Laureate of the State Prizes, Honorary Professor of Moscow University Valery Abisalovich Gergiev. Among the chairs of the creative workshops of the department are some leading artists: soloists of the State Academic Bolshoi Theater of Russia, Honorary Artist M.A. Shutova, People's Artist of Russia V.P. Ovchinnikov, members-correspondents of the Petrovskaya Academy of the Sciences and Arts, National Artist of the Russian Federation E.N. Zimenkova, and Honorary Artist of Russia P.N. Fedotova. The faculty members and students in the department regularly participate in Russian and international scholarly conferences and publish their work in university media and in specialized music publications. The concert activities of the students in the department are many. They have Master degree student toured St. Petersburg, Yaroskavl, Izhevsk, Ekaterina Shelikhina Votkinsk, as well as Italy and National artist of China. During Russia Federation the present year Redkin the students in the department have given 12 philharmonic concerts. For her concert activities at Moscow State University and other universities in Russia, vocal student Elena Tsvetkova, a mezzo-soprano, was awarded in 2004 the title Student of the Year (in the category "For Artistic Achievements"). Students Evgenia Mezhlumova (mezzo-soprano), Gokan Riae (soprano), and Natalia Miatieva (piano) were awarded diplomas at the International Festival-Competition "Contemporary Art and Education" in 2006í2007.

Seminars and practice include theatre and ballet criticism and the analysis of drama and ballet performances. The major direction of work in the department is research on problems in the theory and history of culture, the theory and history of theatre and choreography, the semiotics of theatre, the anthropology of theatre, the theory and history of musical and ballet theatre. In this connection the department can offer a wide base of expertise for students who have chosen the specialty "Theatre Criticism" through the B. Schukin Scientific Library of the Theatrical Institute. The department seeks to perfect the system of training through innovative processes and demands that its graduates be able to compete in the cultural/social space of Russia. Among the pedagological measures taken, practical preparation holds an important place.

Students in the department have practical lessons at the B. Schukin Scientific Library of the Theatrical Institute, the E. Vahtangova State Academic Theatre, the State Academic Small Theatre of Russia, the A.P. Chekhov Museum of MKHAT, the Theatre "Classical Ballet N. Kasatkinoj and V. Vasilev", and the Moscow New Drama Theatre.

Students participate in concerts, musical dramas, and celebratory performances. On November 19, 2006, Department of Drama students took part in the international competition "Star Chance" in New York City. From among more then 200 participants, our student Alexander Bodjansky won third place. A brilliant victory! We congratulate Alexander Bodjansky and his teacher, Nina A. Savitskaja!

Ballroom dances: Modern and Latin (2010 new!!!)
A new bachelor's and master's degree program for Ballroom Dances: Modern and Latin is starting these year. The main areas of training: "The Semiotics of Ballroom Dance", "The History of Modern and Latin Dances", "The Techniques of Modern and Latin Dances", "The Basics of Ballroom Dance Pedagogies".
