The main problems under investigation are as follows: studying the deposition of electrochemical concentrates on electrode surfaces and the formation of analytical signals, investigations dealing with electrodes and electrode materials, determination of substances, development .of a new equipment. Much attention is paid to metrological aspects of electroanalytical chemistry. Electroehemical analytical procedures for the analysis of present-day technological materials, natural and waste waters, air samples (including air in industrial areas), soils, biological materials, medicinal samples, foods, geological objects, and raw materials are developed. Electrodes made of new materials are elaborated, such as glassy-carbon, carbositall, carbon fibers, membranes based crown-ether analogs and podands, and paste electrodes. Processes of the modification of electrode surfaces, which are used for the determination of electroactive and non-active components are investigated. The automated computerized systems and detectors (with corresponding scientific software) are elaborated.

Laboratory of Spectroscopy
(head - Prof. Mikhail A. Proskurnin)

Chemically modified surfaces of solids (silicas, celluloses, polyurethane foams, modified carbositall electrodes, polymer films, etc.) are studied using., diffuse reflection spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence. X-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy, and X-ray electronprobe microanalysis. The potentialities of colorimetry for the identification of the colored compounds and for the study of processes that are accompanied with changes in surface color due to metallochromic indicators or reactions proceeding with changes in pH are studied. Colorimetric method of analysis is developed. The theory and practical realization of thermal lens spectrometry are under active development. This method allows lowering detection limits about 3-4 orders in comparison with molecular absorption spectroscopy. The peculiarities of chemical processes proceeding in true and colloid solutions at low concentrations of components are studied. Applications of thermal lens detection in chromatography is investigated. The methodology of mathematical processing of spectra of complex systems is developed. The action of microwave radiation on the formation of complexes of platinum-group metals is studied.

The laboratory is seeking novel approaches in the development of photometric and fluorescent sensors. For that purpose, methods of selective preconcentration are developed along with the methods of determination of analytes directly in the sensing film or in the permeate after membrane diffusion. The issues of selectivity are addressed by using biocatalysts (enzymes, heme-containing proteins) and molecular imprinting.
The group of enzyme methods develops biocatalytic and biosensor methods based on enzymes and polysaccharides capable of forming highly organized supramolecular structures. The biocatalytic systems and the new generation recognition membranes feature unique sensitivity, selectivity, high reproducibility of the results and stability in aggressive environments, including aqueous-organic solutions. We also study the prospects for the use of ionic liquids in enzymatic methods for the determination of biologically active organic compounds.
The non-enzymatic methods group develops methods for selective preconcentration of low-molecular-weight organic analytes based on molecular imprinting in the pores of track-etched membranes, on quantum dots and in polyelectrolyte multilayers; determination of these analytes by optical methods in the nanocomposites mentioned above; determination of water-soluble polymers by use of their polymer nature.
