... Satellites of the planets are assigned a provisional designation (indicating year of discovery) by the Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams ( CBAT ) upon satisfactory demonstration of the existence of a new object. ... In the past, Comets were first given a provisional designation, consisting of the year and a lowercase letter indicating the order of discovery in the year (e.g., 1994a was the first comet discovered or recovered in 1994, 1994b the second, etc.) ... ... 1.10.2012 . ... Credit Copyright: Ligustri Rolando Explanation: Could this dim spot brighten into one of the brightest comets ever? ... Sky enthusiasts the world over are all abuzz, though, from the more optimistic speculations -- that the newly discovered C/2012 S1 (ISON) could develop a spectacular tail or briefly approach the brightness of the full Moon toward the end of 2013. ... In early 2013 October it will pass very near Mars and possibly be visible to rovers and orbiting spacecraft. ...
This is a copy of a Press Release from E.S.O. The most recent ESO observations of bright Comet Hyakutake have shown rapid changes in the innermost coma, within a few hundred kilometres from the cometary nucleus. This result has only become possible because of the unusual combination of a bright comet being near the Earth, together with the excellent imaging quality of the ESO 3.5-metre New Technology Telescope (NTT). ... . These two images were obtained by F.Lisi and P.Patriarchi on March 25, 1996, in the J band with an exposure time of 30 sec. The bright spot on the upper left is the comet nucleus, while a fragment is visible near the center of each image. Comparing the two images it is possible to see that the fragment is moving out from the comet nucleus at a speed of 17 m/sec. (Here a postscript version of this image)
... The comet 169P was first observed by the Near-Earth Asteroid Tracking system. In order to observe this comet we had to figure out if it was possible to view it from Faulkes Telescope South, a 2m reflecting telescope which is used for research as well as for use by school students around the world over the internet. ... Since 169P is such a bright object, we were able to use a red filter on some of our observations to provide a clearer image. ...
... This past spring, as Comet Hyakutake decorated our evening skies, I received a telephone call from an upset parent. We bought our daughter a telescope to see the comet," she said, "and we can't see anything!" The exasperated mother said they found binocular and naked-eye views to be better than those through the telescope. ... They may be bright overall, but all that light is coming from a big area of space. ... OK, you say, I found Comet Hale-Bopp this evening. ... Does the comet have a tail? ...
Electronic Catalogue of Comets "Halley" . ... In this paper we give a description of the Electronic Catalogue of Comets "Halley", which makes it possible to calculate the evolution of the orbits of comets, to visualize orbital motion, to determine the circumstances of a comet's close approach to planets within a given time interval, as well as a number of other opportunities. ...
... An estimate the rotation period of cometary nuclei is important for understanding and describing the physical processes of the cometary activity. Unfortunately, the measurements of the rotation periods of the comet nucleus depend on the model assumptions and it is one of the main reasons for the scatter of the estimates given in various articles for a given comet. ...
