1. APOD: October 2, 1997 - Colliding Supernova Remnants
... Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. October 2, 1997 . Colliding Supernova Remnants . ... Explanation: When a massive star exhausts its nuclear fuel it explodes . ... For another 100,000 years or so the expanding supernova remnant gradually slows as it sweeps up material and ultimately merges with the gas and dust of interstellar space. ... About APOD > . ...

2. Keplers Supernova Remnant in X Rays
... Keplers Supernova Remnant in X Rays . ... Some type of star exploded to create the unusually shaped nebula known as Kepler's supernova remnant , but which type? ... Recent X-ray data and images of Kepler's supernova remnant taken by the orbiting Chandra X-ray Observatory has shown relative elemental abundances more typical of a Type Ia supernova , indicating that the progenitor was a white dwarf star that exploded when it accreted too much material and went over Chandrasekhar's limit . ...

To locate it, look along the imaginary line between the two end stars on the leading edge of the Ploughs blade (Merak and Dubhe) and Polaris (the North Star), the galaxy M82 (also known as the Cigar Galaxy) along with its companion M81, lies just off this line about a third of the way between the Plough and Polaris. 8. Dust in the bright supernova remnant N49 in the LMC
We investigate the dust associated with the supernova remnant (SNR) N49 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) as observed with the Herschel Space Observatory. N49 is unusually bright because of an interaction with a molecular cloud along its eastern edge. We have used PACS and SPIRE to measure the far IR flux densities of the entire SNR and of a bright region on the eastern edge of the SNR where the SNR shock is encountering the molecular cloud. ... ... October 8, 1996 . ROSAT Explores the X-Ray Sky . ... Explanation: Launched in 1990, the orbiting ROSAT observatory explored the Universe by viewing the entire sky in x-rays - photons with about 1,000 times more energy than visible light .
