First Year of PEP-II/BaBar

Abstract

The BaBar Experiment at PEP-II, SLAC, has made a succesfull first step in 1999. Both the accelerator and the detector have demonstrated excellent performances, placing the experiment in a highly competitive position among the experiments that aim at measurements of CP violation in the B system. In this talk, the current status of the experiment and the progress of the data analysis will be reported. The prospect of the first CP measurement in the near future will be discussed.

B Tagging, B Mixing and CP Violation at CDF

Abstract

The primary B physics goals of the CDF experiment at Fermilab are measuring CP violation in the B meson system and observing Bs Bs= flavour oscillations in the next run of the Tevatron pp= Collider. Essential for both measurements are tagging the B flavour, i.e. determining whether the B meson contains a b quark or b antiquark. We describe recent results of B flavour tagging studies using current CDF data, their application toward measurements of the time dependence of BB= oscillations and a determination of the CP violation parameter sin(2 beta) with CDF's current sample of J/Psi K0s events. CDF's prospects for CP violation and Bs mixing in the next run of the Tevatron Collider are also reviewed.

Jet Physics at the Tevatron

Results are presented for the inclusive jet, differential dijet, and dijet mass cross sections versus jet transverse energy, as measured for proton-antiproton collisions at center of mass energy 1.8 TeV. Data from the CDF and D0 detectors at Fermilab's Tevatron collider are described and compared to next-to-leading order QCD predictions using different parton distribution functions. The ratio of the inclusive jet cross sections at center of mass energies 0.63 TeV and 1.8 TeV is also presented versus scaled jet transverse energy x_T and compared to QCD predictions.

Prof. Seidel will also also present the Physics Colloquium on February 24.
