Note on Filters:
Selected Area 57 (SA 57) is an area of the sky approximately one square degree which was the target of a deep survey initially done with the KPNO 4-m telescope. Over the years this region has been surveyed with a variety of other instruments at other wavelengths. The UIT images will be a nice complement to these other studies. Many SA 57 exposures are planned. This first one was 720 seconds through the A1 filter.
NGC 3351 is a mostly face-on late type spiral galaxy. It is marked by a bar like feature in its central regions and a strong inner ring of star formation. The outside of the disk is relatively quiescent. The face-on orientation of the galaxy means that obscuration by dust in the galaxy is minimal. A total of 1830 seconds were obtained through the A1,B1 and B5 filters.
NGC 5253 is a peculiar low mass spiral galaxy in the nearby Centaurus group of galaxies. It has been well studied in the optical passband and is characterized by a nuclear regions of intense star formation and and overall very blue disk. The galaxy was imaged through the A1,B1 and B5 filters over a total exposure time of 1936 seconds.
NGC 2808 is a stellar cluster in the Small Magellanic Cloud. An exposure of 323 seconds through the B5 filter was obtained.
NGC 3115 is a peculiar S0 galaxy with a small but high surface brightness inner disk. Some studies (e.g. Silva etal 1992) suggest there is on going star formation in this disk. If so, these UIT observations should directly detect those hot stars. NGC 3115 is also thought to have a massive black hole in its center. The galaxy was imaged through the A1 filter for 450 seconds and the B1 filter for 1084 seconds.
NGC 1549 is a nearby elliptical galaxy. It was imaged for 300 through the A1 filter and 1050 seconds through B1.
NGC 4038/9 are a pair of interacting galaxies. The tidal interaction is causing gas to be compressed resulting in regions of enhanced star formation. The pair was imaged for 887 seconds through B1 and 440 seconds through A1.
NGC 1672 is a strongly barred spiral galaxy with strong spiral structure emanating from the bar. Its a classic example of bar driven kinematics and subsequent star formation. NGC 1672 has detailed velocity maps made from Fabry-Perot Observations and the can be found right here! The galaxy was imaged through the A1 and V1 filters over a total exposure time of 1200 seconds.
