Note on Filters:
M31 otherwise known as the Andromeda Galaxy is the nearest large spiral galaxy to our own. Its overall size is about 3 degrees on the sky and thus only a portion of it can be imaged in a single UIT exposure. For a spiral galaxy, the present day star formation rate is quite low and such star formation appears to be deficient in massive stars. UIT will image selected fields associated with spiral arm regions in M31 to improve the census of hot massive stars in these regions. The total exposure time for the first field in M31 was 1300 seconds and done through the A1,B1 and B5 filters.
M92 is a very metal poor globular cluster in our galaxy where there are many hot stars in advanced stages of stellar evolution. This is just one of many globulars to be imaged by UIT. The large field size of UIT will allow the entire cluster to be imaged. The exposure time was 1500 seconds through the A1 and B5 filters.
M67 (picture not available) is an old open cluster in our galaxy. This is one of the best studied clusters there is and the UIT UV data will complement those studies. This exposure was done will the shuttle was unable to communicate to the ground and so there was no telemetry to specify the exposure time. The observation was done with the B1 filter.
NGG 1097 is a barred spiral with a strongly bar induced pattern of star formation. In addition, there are some jets of emission coming from the nuclear regions. A 650 second exposure through the B5 filter was obtained by Astro-2.
Another exposure of M83 or NGC 5236 was obtained. This one was 1300 seconds through the B1 and B5 filters.
