Galaxies are diffuse images which must be detected against a
background of finite brightness with noise. Those galaxies which
have the highest contrast with respect to this background are the most easily dectect. Low surface brightness
galaxies are ones in which the contrast with respect to the background
sky brightness is low, as such they are difficult to discover and
therefore are easily missed. See some representative picture of
