Second Assignment - IN CLASS

Make Your Own Home Page:

In class you will be shown the basics of home page construction using your gladstone account. You may also following the instructions below:

• In a gladstone terminal window type the following commands or you can cut and paste them into your terminal window. To cut our an item hold the left mouse button down while highlighting the item. When done, release your finger from the left mouse button. Move to the window that you wish to past in and hit the MIDDLE mouse button.
  • cd
  • mkdir public_html (creates your "web" folder)
  • chmod oug+rx public_html (gives the correct permissions)
  • cd public_html (go to your web folder)
  • xedit ~wfarens/template.html
  • Type some relevant stuff in the space between the tags. A tag is anything that looks like in the document. You type between the > and < symbols.
  • save this file as index.html by typing in the words index.html next to the load button at the top of the xedit window
  • in netscape now, choose the open button and type in gladstone/~yourusername
  • This is now the beginning of your page

  Advanced Features:

  • Select an Image from the provided link to serve as your masthead. When you find one you like use the save as feature of netscape located under file. Save the images as file.gif. Now hit reload on netscape and you should see this image

  • Pick a topic you are interested in and fill out the links sections.

  • If you want to change the background color you may use the link utility on your page as a guide.

  • If you want a verbal message, we can do record something in class
