Scientific Milestones: (1875 - 1900)
Note the rapid progress in many areas. Also note, that for all intents
and purposes the colonization of the American West was done by 1875 the native culture had been thoroughly surpressed and
the railroad had arrived.
1876 Louis Pasteur discovers anaerobic organisms in
beer that send it bad and which cannot live in
oxygen.
1884 The prime meridian is set through Greenwich,
England.
1884 The first steam turbine generator for making
electricity is developed.
1885 Louis Pasteur discovers vaccination for rabies.
1888 The German physicist Heinrich Hertz produces
and detects radio waves for the first time.
1894 The fossil remains of an early human are found in
Java by Dutch scientist Marie Eughne Dubois.
Dubois calls his discovery "Pithecanthropus
erectus", but it is now known as "Homo erectus".
1895 Grace Chisholm Young receives a doctorate in
mathematics in Germany - the first woman to get
a doctorate by regular examination processes.
1896 Swedish chemist Svante Arrhenius links the level
of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere with global
temperatures and suggests that the ice ages were
the result of low carbon dioxide levels.
1899 J J Thomson measures the charge on the electron.
