Development stages and major networking tools --> Remember the concept of network is to deliver information of all kinds, everywhere, instantaneously:

• Level 0: E-mail Circa 1974 --> DARPA, SPAN, DECNET

• Level 1: Telnet: Text based session with other host computers Circa 1981

• Level 2: FTP --> binary or ascii file transfer Circa 1988 for anonymous clients

• Level 3: Gopher --> text based information systems Circa 1990

• Level 4: USENET News Discussion Group - Circa 1987 --> Biggest Internet "problem" in terms of censorship.

• Level 5: Functional Image Transport --> Circa 1990 -->X-windows: This lives in the UNIX world and has not been easily transported to the MAC/PC platform although its features are incorporated into today's Web browsers.

• Level 6: Hypertext Multimedia Browsers --> Mosaic, Netscape --> first release 1992, really developed in late 1994

• Level 7: Multisession Chat and WhiteBoard --> IRC, Collage --> Circa 1992 but unclear how functional this is now

• Level 8: MBONE - full live video and audio --> circa 1990, good tools around 1993

• Level 9: JAVA --> June 1995 Interactivity through the Web
