ANNOUNCEMENT

Dear Colleague,

We would like to invite you to participate in the International Symposium
on "High Energy Gamma-Ray Astronomy", to be held June 26-30, 2000, in
Heidelberg, Germany.

The idea of the Symposium is to discuss the basic topics and the
objectives of the rapidly developing field of gamma-ray astronomy in the
high energy regime above 10 GeV. The Symposium will cover galactic and
extragalactic sources of gamma rays and their contributions to the
nonthermal particle inventory in the Universe. In addition, it will
discuss the associated questions of particle acceleration, and finally the
possible contributions gamma rays can make to observational cosmology.

The experimental approach to these issues has made considerable progress
with the recent development of ground-based gamma-ray astronomy. Also the
high energy instrumental complement of future satellite observatories with
their large field of view is expected to make important contributions in
the > 10 GeV energy region.

Therefore we believe that such a Symposium will be provide the appropriate
forum for this emerging field. Indeed, also the International Union for
Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) has approved sponsorship of the Symposium.

In more detail, the symposium will consist of the following 4 Parts:

Part 1: Galactic Sources

Supernova Remnants.
Young star formation regions (OB-associations, giant molecular clouds).
Pulsars.
Pulsar winds/plerions.
Sources with relativistic synchrotron jets (Microquasars).
Diffuse emission from the Galactic disk.


Part 2: Extragalactic Sources

Radiogalaxies.
Blazars.
Seyfert Galaxies.
High energy counterparts of Gamma-Ray Bursts.
Rich Clusters of galaxies.


Part 3: Particle Acceleration Models

Diffusive shock acceleration in Supernova Remnants.
Acceleration in relativistic shocks.
Pulsar wind termination shocks.
Particle acceleration and magnetohydrodynamics in AGN jets.
Wind and accretion shocks in clusters of galaxies.


Part 4: Observational Cosmology with Gamma Rays

Diffuse IR/O/UV Background and intergalactic extinction of gamma rays.
Propagation of high energy gamma rays in the intergalactic photon field
and the magnetic fields.
Extragalactic gamma-ray Background.
Gamma rays from Dark Matter.

We plan to have only invited talks and ample time for discussion. Except
for the "nominal" gamma-ray astronomical topics an essential part of these
talks will be devoted to inter-disciplinary aspects. In particular, we
plan several lectures with the tentative titles "Origin of of Galactic
Cosmic Rays", "Physics and Astrophysics of Relativistic Winds and Jets",
"Synchrotron X-ray Astronomy", "Extragalactic Diffuse Background
Radiation", "Dark Matter", and "High Energy Neutrino Astronomy".


It is not foreseen to have purely observational or instrumental sessions.
These aspects will be rather covered by one or two Highlight Talks. In
addition we plan to have Poster sessions, as well as two Mini-Symposia.
One is planned on "Gamma-ray Blazars" in their experimental and
theoretical aspects with emphasis on a multiwavelength approach. The other
Mini-Symposium concerns "The Sensitivity Threshold of Ground-based
Gamma-Ray Astronomy". This subject should not imply detailed discussions
of technical developments, but rather evaluations of the capabilities of
present and future ground- and satellite-based instruments, and their
correspondence to key X-ray and Infrared satellite missions.

The invited papers are planned to be published.

We have organized a similar meeting, albeit on a more specialized scale,
also in Heidelberg, in fall of 1994, which was considered very worthwhile
by many of the participants. The present Symposium could and perhaps
should become a 2-year-interval Symposium, to be located internationally
in the future.

Further workshop information, such as the invited speaker program,
workshop registration fees, accommodation, etc., will be given in the First
Circular, to be distributed by email on March 15. The registration fee
will amount to 200 to 250 Euro. The WEB page of the Symposium is under
construction.
