CURRICULUM VITAE

Popov Sergei Borisovich

Date of birth: December 8, 1971

Place of birth: Moscow (Russia).

During my high-school studies, I was awarded several distinction prizes
on regional and all-Moscow olympiads (contests) in astronomy,
geography, and mathematics.
In 1989 I graduated from the high-school N548 in Moscow.
The same year I was admitted to the physics and astronomy program at
the Physics Department of Moscow State University.

Starting in 1990, I was involved in research projects carried at
the Division of the Relativistic Astrophysics
(Sternberg Astronomical Institute) under supervision of Prof. Lipunov,

My BS Thesis at the Department was connected with the
period fluctuations of X-ray pulsars and accretion onto
isolated neutron stars:"Accretion onto isolated relativistic objects
and stochastic parameters in the accreting systems" (defended with Honor).
Main results of this work were published later in the Astronomical Circular
and Astronomical and Astrophysical Transactions journals.

Starting in September 1993, I continuously teach astronomy and
physics (starting in September 1994) courses
in the high-school N548 in Moscow. Several of my former students
are currently enrolled in the astronomy program at Moscow State
University. The program and syllabus of my high-school
astronomy course have been
published in the journal ``Zemlja i Vselennaja'' (N5, p.48-49, 1996)
popularizing science and especially astronomy and reported at conferences.
I have also given a series of lectures in
theoretical astrophysics and physics of compact objects
at the Physics Department of Moscow State University.

I graduated from the Moscow State University in January 1995
with the average mark 4.8 (5 is the highest).
The title of my MS thesis was entitled
"A model of the star-formation burst at the Galactic center".
The thesis was defended with Honor.
Main results of the thesis were published in the Astrophysical Journal.
In 1995, I participated in the scientific student conference
``Leninskie Gori-95'' held in Moscow State University and
was awarded the first prize for the best scientific student
paper in the field of astrophysics.
In 1996, I was awarded a scholarship
for young scientists at the Physics Department of Moscow State University.
In 1999 I recieved the first prize at the XXVII ITEP Winter school
for oral presentation.

I was enrolled as a post-graduated student at the
Physics Department of Moscow State University. My PhD work has been carried
under supervision of Prof. V.M. Lipunov.
I recieved PhD in Astrophysics in 1998
("Population synthesis of X-ray sources after the burst of starformation
and evolution of isolated neutron stars").

At the persent moment I work at the Sternberg Astronomical Institute
at the department of Relativistic astrophysics.

My main scientific interests are in the field of relativistic
and high-energy astrophysics and stellar evolution:
physics of neutron stars and black holes,
observational appearances of late stages of
stellar evolution in binary systems.
Specific interests include
old isolated neutron stars, and evolution of close binaries
after the bursts of star-formation.

In future, I would like to continue my work to study
the initial parameters
and evolution of neutron stars (isolated and in
binary systems). This includes millisecond pulsars, correlation
of pulsars with supernovae remnants, spatial distribution of neutron stars.
I have about 30 papers in scientific journals and journals popularizing science
(including accepted papers).

I am fluent in C and (mostly) Fortran programming and have experience of work
under variety of operating systems (UNIX, Linux, DOS, etc.).

I have participated in a number of international conferences and
schools (see in the list of publications).

In 1996, 1997 and 1998, I was awarded Soros scolarship for post-graduates
and was awarded a number of grants as part of the Division of the Relativistic
Astrophysics at Sternberg Astronomical Institute.
