Abstract

In principle, X-ray and radio observations may be used to measure the angular as well as the linear sizes of galaxies, and thereby to estimate their distance. This provides a new opportunity for evaluating the Hubble constant; clusters could act as calibrators for cosmological tests. In addition, it may be feasible to determine the peculiar velocity of clusters relative to the microwave background. This review considers such topics as observational data on rich clusters of galaxies, the interaction of the microwave background with hot intracluster gas, astrophysical information on galaxy clusters, the peculiar velocity of clusters, and the microwave background as a new ether. It is suggested that galaxy clusters may become the most valuable source of cosmological information.
