Abstract

It is pointed out that the observed large-scale distribution of matter in the universe agrees with predictions following from the following assumptions: (1) an initial flat spectrum of metric perturbations and general, i.e., adiabatic, low-amplitude perturbations; (2) gravitational instability of the homogeneous universe with respect to scalar-type small perturbations; (3) the existence of hidden mass (i.e., dark matter) whose density predominates over the density of baryons and radiation after hydrogen recombination; and (4) a galaxy formation scenario in which there first arise perturbations of the dark matter, forming gravitational potential wells and collecting baryonic matter. The available data do not favor any of the current hidden-mass models. In addition, recommendations are given on a program of astronomical studies capable of clarifying the nature of the hidden mass and defining the initial spectrum and the structure formation scenario.
