Abstract

Observational data on a rather limited region of space (within the limits of the so-called observer's horizon) attest to a high degree of homogeneity and isotropy in the large-scale structure of the universe. In principle the properties of the real world might deviate significantly from the parameters of an idealized Friedmann cosmological model on scales exceeding the size of the observer's horizon. Limitations on the amplitude of such long-wavelength perturbations are derived from the observed isotropy of the relict microwave radiation. It is shown that information on the limiting perturbation amplitude together with a natural hypothesis on the statistical independence of the perturbations lead to the conclusion that there are no significant density perturbations on scales exceeding the observer's horizon. With regard to metric perturbations, it is suggested that the amplitude of some such perturbations may be substantial without contradicting the observational limits on the amplitude of the long-wavelength perturbations.
