Abstract

Adiabatic perturbations involving the common motion of photons and baryons are discussed. The theory of perturbation growth is considered with attention to acoustic oscillations of the radiation-dominated plasma and their attenuation before and during recombination, the growth of small perturbations in the neutral gas, the nonlinear growth of perturbations leading to the formation of compressed gas layers - pancakes, and the further fate of pancakes leading to their decay into galaxies and protoclusters of galaxies. Late phases of the development of perturbations and cell structure are examined, and statistical properties of the birth of pancakes and counts of QSO are described.
