Like other X-ray astronomy missions, the workhorse detectors of XMM
will be charge coupled devices (CCDs). For the uninitiated the
following set of pages provides a background to their use in X-ray
astronomy.
The pages are based around a paper of several years ago, written by
one of the XMM SOC team members in collaboration with colleagues of
the AXAF CCD Imaging Spectrometer team at Penn State University.
Some of the details are a little out of date, but you will get a
reasonable flavour of the topic
