2001-10-29; Updated responses for MOS and PN

(Text updated; 2001-11-14)

PN

The response matrices s+d of the PN camera have been removed because we realise that their use as a stand-alone matrix may be confusing: they were a simple addition of the two matrices of singles and double split events. A proper renormalisation for the fractions of these type of events is needed, and the effects of charge transfer losses means this can be spatially dependent as well, so one simple matrix makes no sense. Thus the pure response (i.e. RMF) matrices are no longer available here. A much more coherent description is in preparation and we hope to release this as soon as possible. It should be emphasised that the s+d response files (i.e. ***.rsp type ) are still adequate for spectral analysis when the additional signal to noise inprovement using double pixel events is required. Users should always aim to compare the distribution of event types with the reference values by using the SAS task EPPATPLOT - this is very useful in confirming the energy range validity and effects of pile-up before proceeding with spectral interpretation.

MOS

We have replaced the MOS CCD-only response matrices to make them coherent with the existing rmfgen task in SAS.

Problems ?

Questions regarding the CCF should be addressed to the XMM-Newton Helpdesk.
