The count rate pile-up threshold is lower than reported in the User's documents (800 cts/s) The instrumental edges are badly calibrated The energy-scale correction embedded in epfast ("Rate-Dependent CTI", RDCTI) is wrong Systematic soft excesses in different X-ray obscured astrophysical sources Systematic X-Ray Loading (XRL):

Spectral impact of XRL
· NRCO#83 (September 2011): two observations of the Crab Nebula one with the offset map in THICK filter (XRL), the other with the offset map in CLOSED filter (no XRL) · One spectrum extracted for each of the 15 columns around the boresight (included) · PHA: the shift (in PHA space) to re-align the XRL'd to the no-XRL'd spectrum · Results consistent with the expected behaviour Decisions: · epreject (as of SASv12) applies the XRL correction to the PHA event values · New EPN_CTI CCF extension with the linear coefficients (a,b) of the: PHA=a+bXRL relation (currently: a=0; b=1) · Reference CLOSED offset maps in extensions of the EPN_REJECT CCF · Operational change: offset maps calculated in CLOSED filter (for both Burst and Timing Mode) as of the public release of SASv12

Blank fields - concept
Problem: the field-of-view in EPIC-pn fast modes is too small (and the sources often too bright) for a meaningful source photons free region to be available for background extraction This may lead to big uncertainties, especially in obscured X-ray binaries (e.g.: Ng et al., 2010, A&A, 522, 96) Solution: EPIC-pn Timing Mode blank fields Study done by Benjamin Mck · 30 observations identified as bona fide blank fields on the basis of the RAWX profile · "Contamination" from residual weak sources removed through simultaneous MOS exposure in imaging modes · Resulting spectra studied as a function of the position (in Galactic coordinates) and radiation level (as measured by the RGS background counts)
