· for analysis of serendipitous science (not only!) or faint sp ectral features there should b e detailled knowledge on camera background (e.g., in onon-optimum instrument mo de set-up) · camera background obtained with Closed filter · minimum accumulated time p er mo de: length of maximum exp osure (i.e. 1 revolution) · LW mo de: 136 ks, SW mo de: 174 ks, TI mo de: 57 ks so far · use one calibration observation with a sub ject not useful otherwise for EPICpn for a TI mo de Closed filter observation · next "p ossible" case: NRCO-63: MOS-1 filter check, Omega Cen: has already b een observed after (0307 0112220101 PNS003) the EPIC-pn micrometeorite event (0156 0095810401 PNS003), no obvious (!) indication of damage of the Medium filter

· Main idea: calibration measurement without loss of scientific observing time i.e. no additional load on calibration budget · Take a serendipituous (non EPIC-pn) calibration observation: NRCO-63: 1227 0412780101 (2006-08-21), 20 ks · TI mo de Closed filter exp osure: normal set-up (lower threshold 40 adu 200 eV): 10 ks · TI mo de Closed filter exp osure: changed set-up (lower threshold 36 adu 180 eV): 10 ks · within SAS b oth exp osures can b e treated the same: parameter lowerthreshold=40 in task epframes · information from non-standard set-up "for free" (i.e., low-energy background) · no additional offset map calculation in b etween · Lower threshold: 40 [adu] (A1 CMLOTH0: F1615=552) 36 [adu] (A1 CMLOTH0: F1615=548): OCR needed

· 0644 0125321001 PNS010: TI Closed, 12.8 ks, 40 adu · total rate (incl. MIPs, imp ortant for telemetry): 77.5 cts/s · parameterization of low-energy sp ectrum by: p ower-law (index = -2.79 (fit to channel range 70 - 200 adu), and Gaussian (40 - 51 adu). · Extrap olating from 40 adu to 36 adu: exp ected total rate: 194 cts/s · maximum rate without counting mo de: > 400 cts/s · : 1227 0412780101 PNU002: 187 cts/s

· OCR-1762 1227 0412780101 PNU002 successful ! · count rates (dominated by low-energy sp ectral part) as exp ected [187 vs. 194 cts/s] · no unexp ected increase of background b elow default threshold · mayb e general trend, that background increases with time: increasing p ower-law normalization (solar minimum ?)
