Discoveries and Achievements · Discovery of Accretion Luminosity from the late-type White Dwarfs in the Hyades (1971, Castellani & Panagia, ApSS, 10, 122) · Fundamental calibration of the observable parameters of Early type stars (1973, Panagia, AJ 78, 929) · First self-consistent models of the IR emission from HII regions (1974, Panagia, ApJ, 192, 221) · Developed the theory of Radio and IR Emission from Stellar Winds: A new and accurate diagnostic to measure mass loss rates from early type stars (1975, Panagia & Felli, A&A 39, 1) · Invented the word "plerion" to denote the class of filled-center supernova remnants similar to the Crab Nebula (1978, Weiler & Panagia, A&A, 70, 419) · First coordinated multifrequency study of Supernovae (SNe) from radio to -rays: SN 1979C - A case for a complete characterization of the supernova explosion (1980, Panagia et al. , MNRAS, 192, 861) · Radio observations of SNe: A new tool to determine the pre-explosion nature and properties of the progenitor stars (1981, Weiler et al. , ApJ, 243, L151, and many more papers afterwards; see e.g. , Weiler et al. 2002, ARAA, 40, 387) · First study of resonance line multiple scattering as the most effective process for the acceleration of winds from early type stars (1982, Panagia & Macchetto, A&A, 106, 266). · Classical models of the FIR and sub-mm diffuse emission of the Milky Way (1982, Mezger, Mathis & Panagia, A&A, 105, 372, and 1983, Mathis, Mezger, & Panagia, A&A, 128, 212). · First model calculations of population synthesis based on UV and optical spectra. They were used to clarify the nature of the X-ray emission from the dwarf galaxies in the M101 group (1983, Fabbiano & Panagia, ApJ, 266, 568). · Discovery of the new class of supernovae SNIb 1983N: evidence for a separate class of "type I" SNe (Panagia 1985, LNP, 224, 14) · Devised the first plan (through a scheme of logarithmic time intervals, later adopted by all other teams) to minimize the number of HST observations required to accurately determine the light curves of extragalactic Cepheids with periods between 3 and 30 days (Cycle 1 proposal, PI: Sandage). · First identification of the progenitor B3 supergiant of SN 1987A (1987, Panagia et al. , A&A, 177, L25, and Gilmozzi et al. , Nature, 328, 318) · Geometric determination of the distance to SN 1987A and the LMC to an accuracy of 2% (1991, Panagia et al. , ApJ, 380, L23, & refinements in subsequent papers). · Discovery of a systematic difference in absolute magnitude between SNIa occurring in spiral galaxies and those in elliptical galaxies (brighter in the former class by about 0.3 magnitudes than the latter one) suggesting systematic differences in their progenitors (1992, Della Valle & Panagia, AJ, 104, 696).

· First determination of the mass loss from early type stars exploting the full information (total intensity, equivalent width, and detailed profile) of their H line emission, thus achieving accurate (better than 20%) and reliable results (1992, Scuderi et al. , ApJ, 392, 301). · First determination of the Hubble constant using Cepheid calibration of SNIa absolute luminosities (1992 Sandage et al. , ApJ, 401, L7, and 11 more papers in subsequent years) · First discovery of Pre-Main-Sequence stars outside the Milky Way: 1-2M PMS stars in NGC 1850 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (1994, Gilmozzi et al. , ApJ 435, L43) · First STScI astronomer to obtain more than 1,000 citations with a one author paper (since 1998; Panagia 1973, AJ 78, 929) · First discovery (Senior member of the Supernova Cosmology Pro ject) of a cosmological constant using SNIa at high redshifts (1997, Perlmutter et al. , BAAS, 29, 1351; 1998, Nature, 391, 51; 1999, ApJ, 517, 565; and more) · One of the first three STScI astronomers (mid-2002 with Hauser and Livio) included in the Most Cited list for the Space Sciences discipline compiled by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) · First determination of mass accretion rates in PMS stars outside the Milky Way: PMS stars in the star cluster hosting SN 1987A (2004, Romaniello, Robberto & Panagia, ApJ 608, 220) · First STScI astronomer to obtain more than 10,000 citations (since 2004) · Seminal studies on the sources of reionization of the intergalactic medium in the early Universe and possible identification of actual sources (2004 Stiavelli, Fall, & Panagia, ApJ, 600, 508, and 610, L1; 2005, Panagia et al. , 633, L1) · First determination of supernova rates, for all SN types, per unit mass of their parent galaxies, showing much higher rates (up to a factor of 30) of SNIa in spirals and irregulars than in ellipticals. This result indicates that a substantial fraction of SNIa originate from relatively massive stars (>5.5 up to 8 M ) stars that explode within a few hundred million years after their birth. Because of this one may expect systematic differences for SNIa at different redshifts, that could spoil their accuracy and reliability as standardizable candles for cosmological uses (2005, Mannucci et al. , A&A, 433, 807; 2006, Mannucci Della Valle & Panagia, MNRAS, submitted).
