PMSU1 - Table 1B


Positions. distances and estimated absolute magnitudes for late-type binary companions listed in pCNS3. All of these stars were too close to the primary to allow observation as part of the PMSU. The format of this table is similar to Table 1A, save that the position and distance information are for the primary star in the system. Positions are taken from the following sources:
1. Co-ordinates measured at the Palomar 60-inch telescope
2. Co-ordinates measured at either the Palomar 200-inch telescope, Keck or the AAT
3. HST Guide Star catalogue (version 1)
4. pCNS3
5. Digital Sky Survey images
6. Hipparcos
Column 9 lists the apparent magnitude of the primary, column 10, the estimated magnitude difference (at V), and column 11 the separation in arcseconds. Distances are generally derived from the primary star; 105 in column 12 indicates that the primary has an Hipparcos parallax.

B: CNS3 lists a `photometric' magnitude for this star
C: NN 337 - the pCNS3 notes that this star is not listed as a companion to Gl 84.2A in any of the Luyten proper motion catalogues.
D: NN 794, 796 - Gl 171.1A, or ADS 3321A, is Aldebaran, Alpha Tauri.
E: NN 1863 - (1863) is listed as an f-type companion to Gl 452A, 7.5 magnitudes fainter and 15 arcseconds distant. We were unable to locate this star on the Keck telescope TV guider (limiting magnitude R ~ 21).
F: NN 2172 - a companion to LHS 2789 is listed in the NLTT, but not in the LHS.
G: NN 2358 - Gl 569B, known VLM companion from Forrest, Skrutskie & Shore (1987), now resolved itself as a close binary. Lane et al (2001) have derived a total dynamical mass of ~0.13 M(sun)
H: NN 2426 - Eggen (1980) notes that GJ 2112 appears to be a double in good seeing, but there are no confirming observations.
N : These stars are not listed separately in the pCNS3 (i.e. the NN designation refers to the primary).
Del : New companions from Delfosse et al (1999) and Benzit et al (2001). Absolute visual magnitudes for resolved sources are either taken from estimates given in those papers, or have been estimated from the measured difference at K; double lined spectroscopic binaries are generally assumed to have near-equal luminosities.
MZB : New companions from McCarthy et al (2001). Absolute visual magnitudes and distances are estimated by combining our spectroscopic data with the relative magnitudes measured by MZB.
NN 808 - Gl 173.1A is a single lined spectroscopic binary; the absolute magnitude estimated for Gl 173 Ab is a lower (bright) limit. Gl 173.1 Aa is a K3 dwarf.
NN 1741 - Gl 416 A is a K3 dwarf with MV = 7.5
