Spencer's star is the central star in this picture, which is taken from the Digital Sky Survey ( the DSS ). The DSS was made by the Space Telescope Science Institute, scanning photographic plates taken by the Palomar 48-inch Schmidt telescope (the Oschin Schmidt). The faintest stars visible on these images are approximately 1 million times fainter than the faintest stars visible to the naked eye.
Spencer's star lies at a position of RA = 8 hours 3 minutes 26 seconds, Declination = 0 degrees 6 minutes 25 seconds. Right Ascension (RA) ande declination are the celestial equivalent of terrestial longitude and latitude: Spencer's star lies slightly north of the celestial equator, in the constellation of Canis Minor, the little dog. See this link for a map of the region (from the Hawaiian Astronomical society). Spencer's star is almost midway between the region marked M48 and the star Procyon, the brightest star in Canis Minor.
