Stellar Dynamical Models
Spherical Anisotropic Jeans Modeling Software
Author: Roeland van der Marel (1992-1994)
Purpose: predict the velocity dispersion profile of a
spherical galaxy model with an arbitrary velocity
anisotropy profile.
Information: I developed programs to solve this
problem in the context of my study of M87, described
in detail in the following paper:
[R9]
Availability: These programs are not currently
available in an organized form suitable for
distribution. However, feel free to
email me
if you think that I should work on this.
Scale-free Modeling Software
Authors: Roeland van der Marel (1994-1995) and
Jos de Bruijne (1994-1995)
Purpose: predict intrinsic and projected kinematical
quantities of axisymmetric mass densities
with anisotropic velocity distributions in
spherical potentials. Useful for studying asymptotic
behavior near a black hole or in an isothermal halo.
Information:
read this manual
to get started, or
consult the following paper for details:

issue: csh scalefree.uu)
Two-integral Jeans Modeling Software
Authors: Roeland van der Marel (1989-1992) and
James Binney (1985-1989)
Purpose: interpret the observed kinematics of
(early-type) galaxies with axisymmetric f(E,Lz)
models.
Information: read this manual
to get started, or
consult the following papers for details:
[R2],
[R4],

Other Two-integral Modeling Software
Authors: Roeland van der Marel (1992-1997),
Wyn Evans (1992), Eddy Qian (1993-1994)
Purpose: interpret the observed kinematics of
(early-type) galaxies with axisymmetric f(E,Lz)
models.
Information: I have (co-)developed several other
programs (in addition to those listed above)
to study the properties of axisymmetric
two-integral models.
Consult the following papers for details:
[R8],
[R12],
[R21]
Availability: These programs are not currently
available in an organized form suitable for
distribution. However, feel free to
email me
if you think that I should work on this.
Three-integral Orbit Superposition Software
Author: Roeland van der Marel (1995-1997), in a
collaboration with Nicolas Cretton, Hans-Walter Rix
and Tim de Zeeuw
Purpose: predict intrinsic and projected kinematical
quantities of axisymmetric galaxy models with a
fully general dynamical structure.
Information: read the following paper for details:
[R21]
Availability: These programs are not currently
available in an organized form suitable for
distribution. However, feel free to
email me
if you think that I should work on this.
Instrument Specific Software
HST/FOS ACQ/PEAK target acquisition software
Author: Roeland van der Marel (1994-1995)
Purpose: to test acquisition strategies and prepare
observations with the HST/FOS (obsolete since 1997)
Information: read the following paper to get started:
[C5]
Availability:
Download
(save to your disk as fosacqpeak.uu; to unpack
issue: csh fosacqpeak.uu),
or run the program directly from
this website
Purpose: Estimate an unknown constant bias level
(the `pedestal') in HST/NICMOS images, and make
the transitions at the quadrant boundaries continuous.
Information: read this information
to get started.
IMPORTANT NOTE (August 31, 2000): This software
is now available as the IRAF task PEDSUB in the STSDAS
package (stsdas.hst_calib.nicmos). You are advised to
use that task instead of the (UNIX/FORTRAN) version
included here.
