Alex is interested in the origin of Earthlike planets, and pursues this by studying comets and asteroids. These small bodies are the rubble left over from forming the planetary system, and so contain clues to the initial conditions for planetary formation. Recently he has been involved in HST observations of asteroid 4 Vesta, as well as other asteroids, in an attempt to study differentiated bodies in the asteroid belt. He has also been involved in a study of gas production in comets, which has produced some information on the ubiquity of mantle formation (differentiation) in these supposedly pristine objects. Alex's technical interests include image reconstruction and near-IR observations.
