Exlporing the Early Universe -- Workshop Aims

The Universe from Recombination to the First Galaxies and Clusters

Workshop Aims

This workshop is intended as a forum to discuss exploration of the post-recombination era and the early stages of galaxy formation. It is aimed at helping researchers, leaders of ground-based and space astronomy, and policy makers share and understand the latest results in observational cosmology and identify the most promising strategies for the future.

These are truly exciting times for cosmology and the exploration of the origin of the universe. The tremendously succesful synergy between space and ground-based astronomy, epitomized by the Hubble Space Telescope and Keck, has brought a spectacular series of discoveries, such as light from exceedingly distant galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field, evidence for an accelerating universe from cosmologically distant supernovae, and identification of gamma-ray bursters with distant star-forming galaxies. This rapid progress raises new questions about how best to advance our understanding of the early Universe --- questions our workshop is designed to address.

Recognizing that this agenda for the future will be based both on observational progress and on theoretical predictions, presentations will cover a wide range of topics and approaches. While future goals should of course be grounded in an objective evaluation of present achievements and in some realistic recognition of technological capabilities, it is not the purpose of this meeting to explore those capabilities, nor is it desirable to be too constrained by the parameters of telescopes and observatories now on the drawing boards.

The two-day meeting will be centered around a small number of agenda-setting talks which aim at a broad overview of a topic. A number of shorter talks and posters on more specific topics will complete the program. The afternoon of the second day will be devoted to a round-table discussion which will both summarize the workshop and identify the key avenues to progress.
