STScI Preprint #1255
We examine a sample of novae the distances of most of which have been determined by nebular parallaxes, and determine their spectral classes according to the classification of Williams (1992). We show that novae which have been classified as He/N tend to concentrate close to the Galactic plane and are fast and bright, while Fe II novae are slow and faint and they are distributed more homogeneously up to heights of ~ 1000 pc above the Galactic plane. We identify a quantitative characterization of the prototypical 'fast' and 'slow' novae.
