GOODS Field Layout

GOODS Field Layout

Layout of the SIRTF GOODS fields. The red regions show the areas to be covered by SIRTF IRAC (3.6 to 8 micron) observations. The color saturation scales roughly with exposure time: we will acquire nearly uniform 25 hour IRAC exposures over 10' x 16' fields, with an overlap region roughly 10' x 4' with double (50 hour) exposure. In addition, for the HDF-N GOODS field, we plan an ultradeep IRAC exposure covering a pair of parallel 5' x 5' fields, with a total exposure time of 75 hours, reaching a maximum of 100 hours where the 50 hour strip overlaps the ultradeep fields. The ultradeep IRAC observations are contingent upon in-flight demonstration that systematics will not limit their sensitivity. The SIRTF MIPS 24 micron fields are shown in blue, and closely overlap the IRAC fields, with a nearly uniform exposure time of 10 hours. These observations are also contingent upon on-orbit tests to quantify instrument performance and sky confusion. The ultradeep (1 Msec) Chandra ACIS fields are schematically outlined in green. Chandra roll angles are not constrainted for the CDF-S, so the field is shown as a circle. The HST HDF-N central WFPC2+NICMOS field is shown as a white chevron; the surrounding WFPC2 flanking fields are not shown, nor are WFPC2 pointings in the CDF-S.

Overlays of the SIRTF GOODS areas on the Chandra 1 Msec exposure maps. The upper greyscale figures show exposure time maps for the Chandra observations of the HDF-N and CDF-S. The darkest regions have nearly 1 Msec of total exposure time. The HDF--N Chandra observations will be increased to 2 Msec in CXO Cycle 3, with an ultimate goal of reaching 5 Msec. The blue and red rectangles show the approximate areas to be covered by the GOODS SIRTF survey with the MIPS and IRAC instruments. The greyscales below show the nominal exposure time maps for the SIRTF data. Note the two "ultradeep" IRAC fields planned for the GOODS/HDF-N survey.

The grid of white boxes shows the tiling of HST/ACS fields at one telescope orientation, superimposed on the Chandra (outer greyscale) and SIRTF IRAC (inner greyscale) exposure maps. The fields will be revisited approximately every 45 days to enable a search for high redshift supernovae. The center inset schematically shows how the rotated ACS pointings from alternate visits will be tiled over the GOODS area. 15-16 ACS pointings will be used to cover the 10'x16' GOODS area in each epoch.
