GOODS/HST TRANSIENT SEARCH
|
As part of the GOODS HST Treasury Program, we are carrying out a search
for time-variable and transient objects in the Chandra Deep Field South (CDF-S)
and Hubble Deep Field North (HDF-N). GOODS observations with the Advanced
Camera for Surveys (ACS) are divided into five epochs per field, separated
by approximately 45 days. Variable objects, such as high redshift supernova
candidates, can be identified by comparing observations from epoch to epoch,
providing four search opportunities for each of the two fields. Significant
transients will be reported via this web page within 72 hours of the completion
of observations from each search.
Nineteen transients were found in four searches of the CDF-S and eighteen of these were confirmed by the IAU. Sixteen transient objects were discovered in the first three searches of the HDF-N, with fifteen confirmed by the IAU. In the fourth and final search of the HDF-N an additional six transients were identified. With all eight GOODS transient object searches now complete, the total number of transients identified stands at forty-one.
