SMOV Status & Planning Meeting Minutes 03/31/97

SMOV Status & Planning Meeting Minutes

Meeting Date: 03/31/97

NOTE: The next meeting is April 2, 8:30 AM.

STATUS REPORTS

1. Observatory Status - All subsystems nominal

On Saturday, the FGS-1R Servo A moved by a "couple of tenths" of a degree then
came right back. The event occurred during SAA - Level 1. It is being
	investigated further.

The K-factors resulting from the 7026 activities (FF3 optimization) may require
SMS edits if they are needed for the SMS097 in which the FGS1R guide star
acquisition test is performed. However, no one at the meeting believed this
was the case; it will be verified later today.

2. WFPC2 Status - Proceeding nominally with Cycle 6 science and
	remaining SMOV monitors.

3. NICMOS Status

	- Engineering Status - Following the 7042 Fine Alignment activities on
Friday, the Filter Wheels were reconfigured to the nominal pre-positioning
(FW1=F110M, FW2=FW3=F160W). The SI was then reconfigured to BOOT Mode, per
Friday's plan, to eliminate susceptibility to SAA SEUs.

A set of PSTOL procedures designed to collect diagnostic data on filter wheel
rotations have been developed and are planned for execution some time after the
associated FRR scheduled for 1 pm today.

The Detector temperature is 60.82 degK and the VCS temperature is 98.1 degK.

  	- Science Status - As a result of Chris Burrows' analysis of the fine
alignment
data (7042), the camera 3 focus is seen to have moved, in detector space, an
additional 0.17 mm, (+/- 0.06) in the 1-week interval between intermediate
alignment (7135) and 7042. This indicates a significantly slower expansion
rate compared to previous weeks. Other techniques give essentially the
same result. For instance, Marcia Rieke's analysis of the FWHM of total counts
indicates an upper limit for C3 motion in PAM space of ~ 0.9 mm.

Also, dark frames taken during 7054 have been compared to darks from Thermal
Vac testing and show no significant on-orbit radiation damage.

Thoughput checks using data from 7042 tend to confirm last week's report of
low thermal background from the HST OTA.

Gerry Repass requested that, if the NICMOS team plans to uplink final PAM
position commands prior to the SMS-provided opportunity Thursday evening, they
inform him of the desired uplink time by 11 am today.

4. STIS Status

	- Engineering Status - Over the weekend, a CCD motor temperature went slightly
out of limits low. The low limit is set at 15 degC. This is not unexpected,
since the CCD is running slightly cold with the MAMA LVPSs off. Also, given
that safing limit is 0 degC, it was decided to change the lower limit to
	10 degC.

	- Science Status - Nominal. The first STIS ERO (NGC 4151 slitless spectrum)
was observed and appears to be an impressive success. Stefi Baum reported
that
it displays detailed, filamentary, multiple emission-line images.

The second iteration of the target acq test (7067) occurred Sunday night.
There were no results to report at this meeting.

The CCD UV monitor (7063) was executed again and results are being analyzed.

5. FGS status - See new activities.

6. FOC/COSTAR status- no new activity.

PLANNING REPORTS

1. Status of Upcoming SMSs

   	- SMS090 - Currently executing.

	- SMS097 - Initial Mode products are out for review.

		 - This calendar also will include
		   additional focus monitoring activities.

	- SMS104 - Has been built. SARs went out for negotiation over the
week-end. Initial Mode products to be issued later today.

  		 - Contains 24-hour gaps as opportunities for FSW installation
		   for SAA avoidance management.

		 - Will require a "10.2 commanding update for
NICMOS SAA avoidance and for STIS CCD
annealing process. This update is on
schedule. The annealing proposal (7107) will
 		   go in this SMS.

	- SMS111 - The current plan is to include the MAMA turn-on
(7105 revised) in this SMS. This test must first
be run against the BRZ. the STIS team will talk off-line
regarding regression test plans. Depending on the way the calendar
maps out, this SMS may need to be broken into a pair of 3- and 4-day
		   SMSs.

2. Replans

	STIS

	- MAMA HV Turn-on (7105) is currently planned for SMS111. Downstream MAMA
	scheduling is being assessed.

	NICMOS

	- No significant replans have yet been identified.

OPERATIONS STATUS

1. OPUS - Nominal.

2. Archive - Nominal. There is an outstanding question regarding one
observation
of 7063 (STIS CCD UV Monintor) that has still not made it into the archive.
