STATUS REPORTS 1. Observatory Status MOSES status reports: - All observatory subsystems are nominal. 2. WFPC2 Status - Engineering status is nominal. - Science status - nominal. As reported yesterday, the EROs were successfully observed and initial processing has begun. They inclued a planetary nebula and a pair of colliding galaxies. They are reported to look good. Note: Now that the EROs have been performed and the Cycle 6 science has resumed, WFPC2 will no longer report at this meeting, except of course in the event of anomalies affecting SMOV or an adverse change in the observed UV/Lyman alpha throughputs. 3. NICMOS Status - Engineering status - John Troeltzsch reported that, starting sometime on Tuesday, NICMOS has been experiencing a temperature anomaly, which he characterized as a "thermal short". The innermost dewar surface is rising in tempera- ture faster that expected, while the 2nd innermost dewar surface is dropping in temperature. As a result the detector temperatures may equilibrate ~ 1 deg K higher than the thermal vac temperatures while the vapor cooled shield (VCS) may end up cooler than expected (~ 131 vice 151 degK) Rodger Thompson said that these effects can indicate that the nitrogen block has made contact with the front of the nitrogen tank. He explained that, while the higher detector temperature may have the beneficial effect of better detector q.e., and the lower VCS temperature will reduce thermal background, the situation may have the effect of reducing overall instrument life by a fraction of a year (~ 0.6 yr.) There is no obvious correlation with the completion of the SMOV BEA period or with any other space- craft conditions and there is no reason not to proceed with SMOV as planned. If the contact opens up after a few months, then the impact on lifetime will be lessened. Analysis will continue, with the main monitors being the detector mounting cup, the VCS temperature, and pressure monitors. - Science Status - NICMOS science continues to work the details of flats, darks, and cosmic ray removal. 4. STIS Status - Engineering Status - STIS experienced a problem in reporting data out of SDB to the recorder during data collection for the Coarse Corrector Alingment Activity (7075). The problem was traced to a commanding problem in which the data rate was erroneously set to 4kbs vice the normal 1Mbs. As a result the record function shut down too early before all the data been collected. This in turn has been traced to scheduling system error which can now be seen in 10 other places in existing SMOV SMSs. The same problem also recurs in the currently executing SMS at the subsequent visits of the same activity. A database change (back to the proper 1Mbps rate) will be made to correct the 10 instances in upcoming SMSs. Art Bradley and Vicki Balzano will work today to devise an operational workaround for salvaging the upcoming visits in the executing SMS. Science Status - The extent to which last night's data loss degrades the alignment activity will not be known until the PI (George Hartig) looks at all the data later this morning. 5. FGS status - no new activity 6. FOC/COSTAR status- no new activity PLANNING REPORTS 1. Status of Upcoming SMSs - SMS065 - Currently executing. - SMS069 - Signed off. - SMS072 - Final Mode products are out for review. - SMS076 - Built and under internal review. - SMS079 - Built and under internal review. - SMS083 - Calendar built and ready for SAR requests. 2. Replans - No new replans - MAMA HV Turn-on (7105) is delayed (from 21 March)for a minimum of 2 weeks. Assessment of downstream MAMA scheduling will be assessed. OPERATIONS STATUS 1. OPUS - Processing data normally, "repairing" observations where necessary. 2. Archive - Nominal.
