Goals and Purpose of SMOV

The Goals of the Second Sevicing Mission Observatory Verification (SMOV)

Timely Recommissioning of the HST Observatory for Science Operations

Minimize the post-SM2 period during which the observatory as whole and each science instrument (SI) in particular are unavailable for normal science operations.

Commission the Newly Installed SIs - NICMOS & STIS

Engineering activation and functional check-outs, optical alignments and focus, target acquisition testing, aperture and (STIS) slit locations, initial performance characterizations and calibrations, enabling of science programs.

Recommission Existing SIs - WFPC2, FOC, FGS3

WFPC2 - Modified decontamination and cool-down procedure, initial sensitivity checks, re-enabling of Cycle 6 science program.

FOC - Re-deployment of COSTAR (for FOC only), re-verification of COSTAR/FOC focus and alignment, FOC aperture locations, pre- and post-COSTAR sensitivity checks, re-enabling of Cycle 6 science program.

FGS3 - Verification that astrometry is unaffected by SM2 operations.

Recommission Observatory Systems

Commissioning of new FGS and its integration into the Pointing Control System (PCS)

Validation of other Orbital Replacement Units (ORUs)

Perform Early Release Observations (EROs)

Demonstration of NICMOS & STIS science capabilities.
