Subject: Gyro 2 has failed

Gyro 2 failed last night. It had accumulated more than 57,000 hours of run time, well above average. The signatures in the telemetry data indicate that a
broken flex lead caused the failure. This is the expected wear out mode for the gyros. When the gyro failed, the safing system reacted as planned, closing the
aperture door and starting up the Zero Gyro safemode control law.

Gyro 6 was turned on last night, and appears to be working properly. It may take several days for the drift rates to stabilize. The process for bringing HST
out of safemode and up to Two Gyro mode will start today. The science schedule needs to be rebuilt to reflect the use of Gyro 6. Science observations are likely to
restart sometime this weekend.
