Planning and Scheduling Setup

Planning and Scheduling Setup

Last Revision: February 25, 2016 by Tony Roman

Introduction

There is a common set of account initialization scripts that can support all planning and scheduling software users for the following missions:

on the following operating systems:

in the following computing environments:

These scripts are managed under the PS-INIT subsystem of the PR System, and PRs should be filed in order to request changes.

Account Initialization Files

Each user account includes a number of account initialization files in the user's home direcory. The names of these files vary with operating system, but some examples are:

Some of the planning and scheduling computing environments include machines with different operating systems. Also, depending on the operating system, a user's home directory might be shared acrosss multiple machines, or the user might have a distinct home directory on each machine. In order to avoid having separate versions of account initialization files in separate home directories, it is recommended that the user centralize account initialization files in the /user/username directory because that directory is visible to all machines in a given computing environment.

Establishing Account Initialization Files

In order to set up the correct account intialization files and in order to centralize them under /user/username, the account-setup tool can be used. account-setup will install the appropriate account initialization files in /user/username and establish symbolic links to those files from the user's home directory. If installing a particular initializaiton file would clobber a file that the user already has in place, then the tool will inform the user; and it will be necessary to manually resolve the conflict in that situation.

Running the account-setup tool varies by computing environment and operating system. It is usually necessary to type the full path name of the command becasue using just the command name requires the completion of the setup that account-setup accomplishes. The instructions are below.
