The new kid on the block!! FITS files, which both NICMOS and STIS use exclusively. FITS files have been around for a while in one form or another, but for data handled by CDBS, this is a new format. For more information on FITS files, check out FITS Support Office Home Page
When FITS files are processed in CDBS, they run through a verification process. For more information on this, look at fitsverify.
There are three kinds of reference files: reference images (FITS and GEIS), and tables. These are Sun format binary files that can only be read inside the iraf/stsdas environment. Although these are Sun format files, there are tools in STSDAS/IRAF to convert reference files from Sun to Vax format or to read STSDAS tables.
Files are stored in directories according to the instrument they are associated with and file type. The first letter of the directory name is the instrument code. The remainder of the name is either REF for reference images or TAB for tables. For example, HRS calibration images are stored in ZREF and HRS calibration tables are stored in ZTAB. The extension of the file name indicates the type of reference file. See below.
Reference images are stored as two files. The header is stored as a file with an extension ending in the letter h. The data is stored as a file with an extension ending with the letterd. Otherwise, the filenames of the two parts of a reference image are identical. Both files must be retrieved if you want to use a reference image. Reference files are given unique names based on their creation date.
A file name will be unique over the telescope's lifetime. The file name root has the format YMDHHMMSI where Y denotes the year (where 1981 = 1) M denotes the month of the year (where January = 1) D denotes the day HH denotes the hour (00-23) MM denotes the minutes S denotes seconds/2 I denotes the instrument ( where f=fgs, v=HSP, w=WFPC, x=FOC, y=FOS, z=HRS, m=multiple) The file name extension which is defined by file type is appended to the unique root.

An example would be FAR1106TU.R3H:
WFPC2 (last character in the rootname is U=>wfpc2), dark header file (R3H), named on October 27 1995 (FAR1106T).
