Specview Download

To install version 2.17.6, use one of the links below. You may need to click on the links below with the SHIFT key held down to get your browser to load the file.

After downloading the installer file, run it and follow the installation instructions.

Specview is distributed with the install4j installer provided by

Specview is distributed under an Open Source BSD-style license.

If you are a developer interested in Specview's inner workings, you can download the source code from the Source Forge CVS repository. See here how to do it.

Line Identifications

If you expect to use the line identification tool extensively, it is recommended that you download the file below and drop it into the same directory where the other Specview files are.

Specview works without installation of this file, but in that case it retrieves the line identification data from remote servers over the network. Having the line lists locally installed expedites their loading.

Standards Library

If you expect to use the standards library extensively, it is recommended that you download the file below and drop it into the same directory where the other Specview files are.

Specview works without installation of this file, but in that case it retrieves the data from the Space Telescope Science Institute web site. Having the standard spectrograms locally installed expedites their loading.

Kurucz Library

In order to use the Kurucz library, the file below must be downloaded and dropped into the same directory where the other Specview files are.

Specview works without installation of this file, but in that case the Kurucz models for the Sun and Vega will not be available. It also won't be able to access any of the other Kurucz model spectra. In order to do that, the specview_kurucz.jar must be installed locally.

A note on where to install the JAR libraries on Macs

The JAR files above should be placed in the same directory where all other specview files are. This is pretty trivial to know on Linux and Windows systems, it's whatever directory you told the installer software to put the files in. On Macs, however, they will be in a subdirectory of that. Suppose you told the installer to install in the default place /Applications/spv/. In this case, the specview JAR files will be copied to subdirectory /Applications/spv/Specview.app/Contents/java/app/. That's the place were you should place the standards, lines, and Kurucz libraries.
