STIS Mode Select Mechanism Grating Positions (Revision A)

ABSTRACT We summarize the central wavelengths corresponding to each of the defined STIS grating positions.

1. Introduction
The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) has a diverse set of observing configurations which are selected via the Mode Select Mechanism (MSM), a nutating grating wheel. For observing configurations where the spectral format is larger than the detector, the gratings must be scanned across the detector in successive steps. A complement of Prime and Intermediate grating settings have been defined in this report to support spectroscopic observations with each of the STIS gratings. In Table 1 below, we present central wavelengths for each STIS grating. In cases where the grating can be scanned, a series of prime and intermediate central wavelengths are listed. The prime wavelength settings correspond to grating scan angles which give continous spectral coverage with ~10% overlap. The intermediate grating settings have been defined for scanned gratings modes to place lines of astrophysical interest at the center of the detector. The positions have been designed to incorporate the optimum number of diagnostic lines in each of the spectral ranges. The MSM grating positions defined in this ISR are the set that will be available for use by GOs and GTOs in Cycle 7. A preliminary description of the STIS science team's selection of the central wavelengths for each observing mode was given in SER CAL-016 and SER CAL-024. In this revision to ISR-009, we primarily incorporate changes to the list published in the STIS Instrument Handbook and changes in grating settings proposed by the STIS P.I., Bruce Woodgate, which have resulted from STIS test and alignment activities at Ball Aerospace.

2. Revision History
In this revision of ISR009, the MSM grating position list has been updated to reflect the final central wavelength list published in the STIS Handbook, June 1996. In addition, several changes made by the STIS Science Team since publication of the STIS Instrument Handbook have also been included.

The G230M central wavelength 3134 å and the G750M central wavelength 10871 å have been deleted. The MSM position 10871 å was outside the allowable MSM scan range, and the central wavelength 3134 å was removed because it had no astrophysical applications. A new position for G140L, 1575 å has been added to move the position of the Kypton lamp continuum onto the detector.
