FOS NEWS

Current FOS Activities
----------------------

The FOS continues to operate nominally. As we move closer to the time
of the Servicing Mission (scheduled for Feb 1997), all remaining
Cycle 5 and Cycle 6 programs are being scheduled so that they
are completed before the Servicing Mission. The schedule insures that
all WFPC2 and FOC imaging to be used as FOS and GHRS EARLY/ACQs will
be performed before their corresponding spectroscopic science observations.


FOS Personnel Changes
----------------------

The next few months will see substantial changes in the FOS team personnel.

Stephan Martin left the FOS team on 1 May to take a position at Williams
College. He has been replaced by Ed Smith, a long-time Data Analyst here
at STScI.

Anuradha Koratkar will be leaving the team effective 1 August to become the
PRESTO Project Scientist here at STScI. Anuradha will continue to support
the FOS programs for which she is the Contact Scientist.

Michael Dahlem will be leaving the Institute on 1 August to take an
ESA position with the X-ray Multiple Mirror Satellite (to be launched in 1999).
Ron Downes will be picking-up Michael's Contact Scientist duties after
Michael leaves.

NEW FOS DOCUMENTATION

Two FOS Instrument Science Reports were distributed in May. To request

CAL/FOS 147, "FOS Cycle 6 Calibration Plan", by M. Dahlem et al., May 1996

Abstract: This report describes the Cycle 6 (close-out) plan for the
FOS as an active (as opposed to archival) instrument. No special
calibrations will be performed. The plan calls for the use of 75 external
target orbits and 128 orbits of internal orbit time.

Abstract: In this report we provide the white light observed pre-COSTAR and
post-COSTAR Point Spread Function (PSFs) and the Line Spread Functions (LSFs)
for both the blue and red FOS detectors. The white light PSFs and LSFs have
been determined from pre-COSTAR proposals 1528 and 3366, and post-COSTAR
proposal 5626. These observed PSFs represent the FOS instrumental PSF
convolved with the diode for each detector. A comparison of the pre-COSTAR
LSFs with the model LSFs shows that the red detector LSFs are very similar
and the blue detector model LSFs are underestimated. This is because of the
strong dependence of the pre-COSTAR PSF on the optical telescope assembly
focus changes. The comparison also shows that the color dependence of the
LSFs is very small. Therefore, the white light LSFs can be used for any
grating.
