Information and Resources

Phone Book

There is an online version of STScI's
telephone directory. The EXTENSION command is used to search this directory; EXTENSION typically takes one argument--a string that is used as a search key. This string can be a first name, last name, room number, telephone extension, branch, or computer username. The example in Figure 9.1 shows how EXTENSION can be used to search for all occurrences in the phone book of the string "dd". Note that the search is not case sensitive.

Creating a Personal Phone Directory

You can create your own personal phone directory file which will be searched by EXTENSION after the standard Institute phone directory file. In your file, you can have names, addresses, phone number, or any other text that you want included--anything in the file will be searchable.

To create your personal phone directory file, edit a file called PHONE.DAT using whatever editor you prefer. The PHONE.DAT file should be stored in your home directory; it will automatically be searched whenever you check the directory listing.
