Remote Sessions

This section describes how to establish an interactive session on a remote computer while you are logged on to the VMS host. There are two ways to do this: Telnet (which you will use for connecting to Unix hosts or any remote system) and the
DECnet SET HOST to connect to another VMS machine. We will also describe how to access and move files across a local network using DECnet remote file access.

SET HOST

To login to a remote node on the network, the SET HOST command is used. For example, if you are logged into the node AVION and wish to login to the node EOTVOS, you would issue the command:

$ SET HOST EOTVOS
You will get a Username: prompt from the remote node and can then login in the usual manner. This does, of course, require a valid account on the remote node.

When you're done working on the remote node, type LOGOUT. You will be returned to the machine from which you started; when this happens, the system displays a message like the following:

%REM-S-END, control returned to node _AVION::

Telnet

You can login to a remote machine using the telnet command. This is usually done by typing the destination on the command line, although the connect command can also be used at the Telnet> prompt. For example, Figure 8.8 shows how to use Telnet to login from the VMS Science Cluster to the Unix cluster ra. It is sometimes necessary to use an Internet address as the destination to be opened. Internet addresses take the form of four numbers, separated by periods, for example:

$ TELNET 128.30.76.4
Once you have started a Telnet session, you can get a list of available commands by typing a question mark (?).
