HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE

DAILY REPORT #2536

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 01/10/00 - 0000Z (UTC) 01/11/00

Daily Status Report as of 011/0000Z

1.0 OBSERVATIONS SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed Two Sets of S/C 8516 (Gyro/FHST Alignment)

The purpose of this proposal is to calibrate the scale factors and
alignments of the gyros that were replaced during SM3A. There were no
reported problems.

1.2 Completed STIS/CCD 8410 (STIS CCD Hot Pixel Annealing C8)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to assess
the effectiveness of the CCD hot pixel annealing process by measuring the
dark current behavior before and after annealing and by searching for any
window contamination effects. In addition CTE performance is examined by
looking for traps in a low signal level flat. The observations were
completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.3 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 8497 (Point Spread Function
Verification)

The WF/PC-2 was used to verify the WFPC2 PSF after SM3A. There were
no reported problems.

1.4 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 8408 (STIS CCD Dark Monitor C8)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make a
CCD bias calibration observation. This is to monitor the darks for the
STIS CCD. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies
were reported.

1.5 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 8409 (CCD Bias Monitor C8)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to monitor
the bias in the 1x1, 1x2, 2x1, and 2x2 bin settings at gain=1, and 1x1 at
gain = 4 in order to build up high-S/N superbiases and track the evolution
of hot columns. The observations completed with no problems.

1.6 Completed Three Sets of STIS/MA1 8426 (Cycle 8 MAMA Dark Measurements)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1) was used to make a
routine Cycle-8 MAMA dark noise calibration measurement. This proposal
will provide the primary means of checking on the health of the MAMA
detectors. This is done through frequent monitoring of the background
count rate. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems
were reported.

1.7 Completed STIS/CCD 8503 (STIS To FGS Alignment in SM3a)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to
determine the transformation of the STIS CCD detector reference frame to
the FGS reference frame. No problems were encountered.

1.8 Completed STIS/CCD 8411 (STIS CCD Spectroscopic Flats C-8)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to obtain
CCD flats in the spectroscopic mode. The observations were completed as
scheduled, and no anomalies were reported.

1.9 Completed STIS/CCD 8506 (STIS SM3a Corrector and Focus Check)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to check
the instrument's focus. The instrument's focus is checked in two ways: {1}
taking a series of images with small dithering offsets {to effectively
improve the spatial resolution, while rejecting cosmic rays and hot
pixels}, and {2} stepping a star {in sub-pixel steps} across a narrow
echelle slit {e.g., the 0.1x0.09 slit}, using the CCD. The observations
completed with no reported problems.

1.10 Completed STIS/CCD 8202 (Bright Quasar Close Lensing Search)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make
observations of HCLQ1103-2 as part of a second generation survey to search
for bright lensing quasars. With the restored PSF, new images will be
considerably more sensitive to the presence of both close separation and
faint lens components, and because STIS reaches two magnitudes fainter the
PC, the new snapshot images will have much greater dynamic range. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 8499 (Servicing Mission 3A Early Release
Observation Program 1)

The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain early release observations for
Servicing Mission 3a {SM3a} designed to demonstrate that HST remains
capable of producing the superb images and premier science . The program is
divided into two sets of observations. The primary observation is a deep
set of exposures on the core of Abell 2218, a cluster of both scientific
importance and great beauty. A much shorter set of observations on NGC
2392, the "Eskimo" nebula, should provide a striking image of a planetary
nebula which displays an unusual array of morphological features. The
observations completed nominally.

1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 8495 (Flat Field Calibration)

The WF/PC-2 was used to check for changes in flat field using
external earth flat fields. There were no reported anomalies.

2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY:

2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions:
Scheduled Acquisitions: 9
Successful: 9

Scheduled Re-acquisitions: 7
Successful: 7

2.2 FHST Updates:
Scheduled: 21
Successful: 21

2.3 Operations Notes:

Servicing Mission Observatory Verification (SMOV) continues.

ROP SR-1A was used to clear the SSR EDAC error counter.

The STIS MCE-1 reset at 011/030505Z while the low voltage was on
and while outside any SAA interval. The STIS flight software error counter
was reset at 011/0326Z per ROP NS-12. MAMA-1 recovery will be accomplished
at 012/1057Z via normal SMS commanding.

TRANS mode observations were made, using FGS-2 to observe star
INCA221-167 while FGSs 1 and 3 remained in fine lock. Initial analysis
indicates that the X-axis did not change appreciably from ground to orbit,
and the Y-axis got a lot better. More complete analyses will be performed
upon ground receipt of the SSR engineering dump.

3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS:

Continuation of SMOV and normal science observations and calibrations.
