HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE

DAILY REPORT #2496

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 11/08/99 - 0000Z (UTC) 11/09/99

Daily Status Report as of 313/0000Z

1.0 OBSERVATIONS SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 8443 (WF/PC-2 Cycle-8 Supplemental
Darks pt1/3)

The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain three dark frames every day to
provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot
pixels. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were
reported.

1.2 Completed STIS/CCD 8409 (CCD Bias Monitor C8)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to monitor
the bias in the 1x1, 1x2, 2x1, and 2x2 bin settings at gain=1, and 1x1 at
gain = 4 in order to build up high-S/N superbiases and track the evolution
of hot columns. The observations completed with no problems.

1.3 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 8408 (STIS CCD Dark Monitor C8)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make a
CCD bias calibration observation. This is to monitor the darks for the
STIS CCD. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies
were reported.

1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 8301 (A Snapshot Survey of X-ray Selected Central
Cluster Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of the
x-ray, central cluster galaxy A401. Central cluster galaxies are the most
massive stellar systems known and have been used as standard candles for
many decades. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no
anomalies were noted.

1.5 Completed WF/PC-2/STIS/CCD 7419 (The Low Stellar Luminosity
Function in Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies)

The WF/PC-1 and the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) were
used to observe the dSph satellite galaxies of the Milky Way which provide
the nearest, and best studied, examples of dark-matter dominated systems.
They have stellar velocity dispersions well in excess of those consistent
with their mass being predominantly in a stellar mass function at all like
that of the solar neighborhood, or of the Galactic globular clusters. The
observations completed nominally.

1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 8307 (Morphology of High Radio Surface Brightness
Planetary Nebulae)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the high radio surface
of the planetary nebula PK019-05D1. The morphological transformation from
the spherically symmetric circumstellar envelopes of AGB stars to the
complex, bipolar structures of planetary nebulae has remained one of the
major unresolved problems in the late stages of stellar evolution. The
observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.7 Completed Three Sets of STIS/CCD 8549 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS
Non-scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation III)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make
high galactic latitude observations as part of a non-scripted POMS Test
Proposal. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems
were reported.

1.8 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 8545 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS
non-scripted parallel proposal continuation VI)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make low
galactic latitude, non-scripted parallel observations as part of a POMS
test proposal. The observations were completed as planned, and no
anomalies were reported.

1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 8199 (Local Cosmology: The Nearby Flow Field and
its Structure)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxy NGC6503 in
order to study its nearby flow field and structure. Very little data are
available to constrain the velocity field of galaxies in the local
neighborhood {<= 500 km/sec}. The observations were executed as scheduled,
and no anomalies were noted

1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 8259 (The Origin of Blue Wings on NLR Line Profiles)

The WF/PC-2 was used to attempt understanding the kinematics of the
Narrow Line Region {NLR} in Seyfert galaxies. The observational signature
being looked for is the famous `blue wing' found on the OIIILambda5007
lines of almost all Seyfert galaxies. The proposal completed with no
reported problems.

1.11 Completed WF/PC-2/STIS/MA1 8044 (UV Spectroscopy of Chimneys in
Edge-on Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 and the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1) were
used to better understand our Galactic halo through observations of other
galaxies. NGC 891 is well suited for this purpose, because it is edge-on.
The long spectrograph slit can be placed perpendicular to the galaxy plane
to provide information on the chemical composition and excitation with
height above the plane. The observations were successfully completed.

1.12 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 8442 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 8 Standard Darks)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of Cycle 8 standard dark
calibration observations. This dark calibration program obtains dark
frames every week in order to provide data for the ongoing calibration of
the CCD dark current rate, and to monitor and characterize the evolution of
hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies
were noted.

1.13 Completed STIS/MA1 8426 (Cycle 8 MAMA Dark Measurements)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1) was used to make a
routine Cycle-8 MAMA dark noise calibration measurement. This proposal
will provide the primary means of checking on the health of the MAMA
detectors. This is done through frequent monitoring of the background
count rate. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems
were reported.

1.14 Completed STIS/CCD/MA1 8241 (A Snapshot Survey of Interstellar
Absorption Lines)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD and MA1) was used to
make high resolution Echelle spectrographic observations of the standard
ultraviolet star HD1383 as part of a snapshot survey of interstellar
absorption lines. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.15 Completed STIS/MA1 8424 (MAMA Sensitivity and Focus Monitor C8)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1) was used to make
observations of object AGK+81D266 in order to measure the sensitivity and
to focus monitor C8. This also is to monitor sensitivity of each MAMA
grating mode to detect any change due to contamination or other causes, and
to monitor the STIS focus in a spectroscopic mode. A wavelength
calibration was also taken. The observations were completed as planned,
and no anomalies were reported.
