HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE

DAILY REPORT #2493

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 11/03/99 - 0000Z (UTC) 11/04/99

Daily Status Report as of 308/0000Z

1.0 OBSERVATIONS SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed STIS/MA1 8211 (An Ultraviolet Census of Counterparts to
Highly Luminous X-ray Sources in M31 Globular)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1) was used to make
ultraviolet observations of the highly luminous x-ray sources in globular
cluster B03 in the Andromeda galaxy (a.k.a., NGC-224). The cores of
certain globular clusters in our Galaxy contain some of the most
extraordinary stars known, identified by their intense, near-Eddington
limited X-ray emission. The observations were executed as scheduled, and
no anomalies were noted.

1.2 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 8408 (STIS CCD Dark Monitor C8)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make a
CCD bias calibration observation. This is to monitor the darks for the
STIS CCD. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies
were reported.

1.3 Completed STIS/CCD 8228 (The Black Hole Versus Bulge Mass
Relationship in Spiral Galaxies)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make
observations of the galaxy NGC-0157 in order to study the black hole versus
bulge mass relationship in spiral galaxies. A wavelength calibration image
was also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no
anomalies were noted.

1.4 Completed Four Set of STIS/CCD 8549 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS
non-scripted parallel proposal continuation III)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make
high galactic latitude observations as part of a non-scripted POMS Test
Proposal. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems
were reported.

1.5 Completed FGS 8102 (FGS Astrometry of the Extrasolar Planet of GL876)

The Fine Guidance Sensors were used to make astrometric
observations of a extrasolar planet which is orbiting the M4 class dwarf
star GL876. This will help determine the planet's mass. The observations
were completed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.6 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 8441 (WF/PC-2 Decontaminations and
Associated Observations Pt. 1/2)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make its monthly decontamination
operations. Also included are instrument monitors tied to decons:
photometric stability check, focus monitor, pre- and post-decon internals
{bias, internal flats, k-spots, and darks}, and ultraviolet throughput
checks. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were
noted.

1.7 Completed STIS/CCD 8202 (Bright Quasar Close Lensing Search)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make
observations of HCLQ2159-4 as part of a second generation survey to search
for bright lensing quasars. With the restored PSF, new images will be
considerably more sensitive to the presence of both close separation and
faint lens components, and because STIS reaches two magnitudes fainter the
PC, the new snapshot images will have much greater dynamic range. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 7468 (Young Globular Clusters in Merger Remnants
-- Part 4)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of merging galaxy
NGC-3601 to study its globular clusters. Mergers seem to have played a
major role in determining the shapes and dynamics of E and S0
galaxies. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies
were noted.

1.9 Completed STIS/CCD 8545 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS non-scripted
parallel proposal continuation VI)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make
High galactic latitude, non-scripted parallel observations as part of a
POMS test proposal. The observations were completed as planned, and no
anomalies were reported.

1.10 Completed STIS/CCD 8409 (STIS CCD Bias Monitor C8)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make a
CCD bias calibration observation. This is to monitor the bias in the 1x1,
1x2, 2x1, and 2x2 bin settings at gain=1, and 1x1 at gain = 4, to build up
high-S/N superbiases and to track the evolution of hot columns. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported.

1.11 Completed STIS/MA2 8429 (Cycle 8 Plate Scale Verification)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA2) was used to conduct
a Cycle-8 plate scale calibration verification. The calibration was
completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported.

1.12 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 8443 (WF/PC-2 Cycle-8 Supplemental
Darks pt1/3)

The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain three dark frames every day to
provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot
pixels. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were
reported.

1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 8398 (Saturn's Rings)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the rings around the
planet Saturn. Saturn's rings are a unique dynamical laboratory and
continue to present challenging problems that require additional data to
attack. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were
noted.

1.14 Completed WF/PC-2/STIS/CCD/MA1/MA2 8207 (The Ofpe/WN Stars In M33:
Understanding Wolf-Rayet Star Formation In Different Environments)

Both WF/PC-2 and the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD, MA1
and MA2) were used to make observations of the Wolf-Rayet star UIT003 that
is located in the galaxy M-33. WF/PC-2 imaging parallel to the primary
spectroscopy in UBV and FUV filters will substantially extend our study of
the hot massive star population and populous stellar clusters in this
galaxy. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The observations
were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported.

2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY:

2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions:
Scheduled Acquisitions: 7
Successful: 7

Scheduled Re-acquisitions: 10
Successful: 10

2.2 FHST Updates:
Scheduled: 10
Successful: 10

2.3 Operations Notes:

Using ROP SR-1, the SSR EDAC error counter was cleared twice.

The SSR playback pointer was set at 307/1557Z per ROP SR-3.

A TTR was written for a period, starting at 307/2349Z, when there
was an inability to lock onto data in the coherent mode. Recovery
procedures were unsuccessfully attempted four times. As a result, there
was an 18-minute, 27-second period of non-recoverable 32k engineering data.

The approved loads for the target of opportunity will be uplinked
later today. The added proposals, STIS 8243 and STIS 8112, will observe
SN199em in NGC1637.

3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS:

Continuation of normal science observations and calibrations.
