HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE

DAILY REPORT #2340

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 03/30/99 - 0000Z (UTC) 03/31/99

Daily Status Report as of 090/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 7408 (Parallax, Proper Motion, and Spectral Energy
Distribution of an Isolated Old Neutron Star)

The WF/PC-2 was used to study the parallax, proper motion, and
spectral energy distribution of the old neutron star RXJ185635. The target
is a bright soft X-ray source in the direction of the R CrA molecular
cloud. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were
noted.

1.2 Completed Six Sets of STIS/CCD 8091 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS
Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make high
galactic latitude, non-scripted, parallel observations. The observations
were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted.

1.3 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 7713 (WF/P-2 Cycle 7 Supplemental
Darks pt3/3)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make supplemental dark calibration images.
This dark calibration program obtains three dark frames every day to
provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels.
The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted.

1.4 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 7949 (CCD Dark and Bias Monitor --
Cont. to June 99)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to conduct a
CCD dark calibration and a bias monitoring program. It was also scheduled
to track the growth of hot pixels on the CCD in general and within the
various target acquisition apertures specifically. The observations were
executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.5 Completed Two Sets of STIS/MA2 7950 (Cycle 7 MAMA Dark Measurements)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA2) was used to make a
dark calibration image. This is to establish if the detectors are
performing nominally, that no internal movement of the MCP has taken place,
and establish dark level in orbit for a given operating temperature. These
darks will be used in later image reduction and also trended over
instrument life time as indicators of detector degradation or damage. The
observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.6 Completed STIS/CCD/MA2 7432 (Morphological and Spectral Evolution of
Galaxies)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD and MA2) was used to
make observations to study the morphological and spectral evolution of the
galaxy 3C424-1. A library of ultraviolet images of normal galaxies at low
redshifts is essential to our understanding of the properties and evolution
of the high redshift universe. The observations were completed as planned,
and no problems were reported.

1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 8090 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-II Parallel Archive
Proposal Continuation)

The WF/PC-2 was used in the parallel mode to make some low galactic
latitude archive observations. The program will be used to take parallel
images of random areas of the sky. The observations were executed as
scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6359 (Core Properties of the Bulges of Spiral
Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of spiral
galaxy NGC-4696 in order to study its central bulge. The aim is to
investigate the core properties, correlations with global galactic
properties, and the frequency of occurrence of multiple and/or miscentered
nuclei. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies
were noted.

1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6582 (Are the Damped Lyman-Alpha Systems at z>3
Really Spiral Galaxies?)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the damped Lyman-Alpha
systems of object PC0953+474. We still do not know well the sizes of the
damped Lyman-Alpha systems or their star formation rates. The observations
were completed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 6461 (High-Resolution Next Bright Galactic Nova)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make high resolution images of the bright
galactic nova U-Scorpio after it erupted to search for fluorescence and
reflection light echoes from, and small-scale structure in, the nova
circumstellar gas and dust ejecta. These observations were a target of
opportunity, and a new SMS had to be built. The observations were executed
as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.11 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6359 (Core Properties of the Bulges
of Spiral Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of spiral
galaxies NGC-5633 in order to study their central bulges. The aim is to
investigate the core properties, correlations with global galactic
properties, and the frequency of occurrence of multiple and/or miscentered
nuclei. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies
were noted.

1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 7465 (White Dwarf Distance and Precision Age for
Globular Clusters)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of white dwarf star
WD1350+657 which is located in globular cluster 47-Tuc. The observed
cooling sequences for the clusters is to be fit to the corresponding FCSs
(Fiducial Cooling Sequences) to determine accurate cluster distance moduli
and absolute ages. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no
anomalies were noted.
