HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE

DAILY REPORT #2299

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 02/01/99 - 0000Z (UTC) 02/02/99

Daily Status Report as of 033/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 7948 (CCD Dark and Bias Monitor --
Cont. to Dec. 98)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to measure
CCD dark current and bias rates for the two supported amplifier settings
{GAIN=1 and GAIN=4} in order to gather data for making superdarks and
superbiases. The data will be used to track the growth of hot pixels on
the CCD in general and within the various target acquisition apertures
specifically. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no
anomalies were noted.

1.2 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 7713 (WF/P-2 Cycle 7 Supplemental
Darks pt3/3)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make supplemental dark calibration images.
This dark calibration program obtains three dark frames every day to
provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels.
The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted.

1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 6651 (WLR Distances from Accurate Multi-Color
WF/PC-2 Photometry of A & B Supergiants in M-31 and M-33)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make multi-color photometric observations of
NGC-224 (a.k.a., M-31). This is to study A and B supergiant stars in M-31
and M-33 with a precision far exceeding that of existing ground-based
estimates. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems
were reported.

1.4 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 7912 (STIS Parallel Archive Proposal
- Nearby Galaxies - Imaging and Spectroscopy)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make
parallel observations of nearby galaxies. This survey will be useful to
study the star formation histories, chemical evolution, and distances to
these galaxies. These data will be placed immediately into the Hubble Data
Archive. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems
were reported.

1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 6360 (A Snapshot Survey of "Radio Loud" IRAS Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of the
radio loud IRAS galaxy Gal-0052+4. The WF/PC-2 was used to discern high
surface brightness structures in its post-starburst active nuclear regions.
The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were
reported.

1.6 Completed Four Sets of STIS/CCD 8091 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS
Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make high
galactic latitude, non-scripted, parallel observations. The observations
were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted.

1.7 Completed FOC/96 6349 (Snapshot search for High Redshift QSOs with
Far-UV Flux)

The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make snapshot images of
the quasi-stellar object Q0951+466. This is to determine if this high
redshifted object has a far ultraviolet flux. The observations were
executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.8 Completed Five Sets of WF/PC-2 7620 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Standard Darks)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of Cycle 7 standard dark
calibration images. This dark calibration program obtains dark frames
every week in order to provide data for the ongoing calibration of the CCD
dark current rate, and to monitor and characterize the evolution of hot
pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were
noted.

1.9 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 7505 (The Hubble Diagram for Distant
Supernovae Measuring Cosmic Deceleration and Global Curvature)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of Super Nova SN1999A1 and
SN1999A2 in order to produce a precise Hubble diagram from measuring cosmic
deceleration and global curvature. HST can make an essential contribution
by providing photometry with substantially higher precision and better
temporal coverage than can be obtained from the ground. The observations
were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.10 Completed STIS/MA2 7950 (Cycle 7 MAMA Dark Measurements)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA2) was used to make a
dark calibration image. This is to establish if the detectors are
performing nominally, that no internal movement of the MCP has taken place,
and establish dark level in orbit for a given operating temperature. These
darks will be used in later image reduction and also trended over
instrument life time as indicators of detector degradation or damage. The
observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.11 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 7357 (Testing the Nature of "Type 2"
Liners)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to observe
the "Type 2" LINER NGC-4486. LINERs, like Seyferts, come in two varieties:
"type 1" have broad permitted lines and "type 2" only have narrow lines.
While LINER 1s undoubtedly are genuine AGNs, the true nature of LINER 2s
remains unknown, although they make up most of the LINER population. A
wavelength calibration image was also taken. The proposal completed with
no reported problems.

1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 8090 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-II Parallel Archive
Proposal Continuation)

The WF/PC-2 was used in the parallel mode to make some low galactic
latitude archive observations. The program will be used to take parallel
images of random areas of the sky. The observations were executed as
scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.13 Completed STIS/CCD 7475 (The Chemical Content of the Universe at Z<
1.6)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make
observations of the background quasar Q0935+4143. Damped Lyman-Alpha
absorption systems provide a means of directly probing the chemical content
of the deep universe. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The
observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.14 Completed WF/PC-2 8061 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-II Backup Parallel
Archive Proposal)

This is a POMS test proposal designed to simulate scientific plans.
The proposal was executed as planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.15 Completed WF/PC-2 7447 (The Cosmological Evolution of Quasar Host
Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of galaxy Q1313-0138 as
part of a survey to study the cosmological evolution of galaxies which host
quasars. Other point spread function observations were taken to test the
calibration of the cameras. The observations were executed as scheduled,
and no anomalies were noted.

2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY

Scheduled Reacquisitions : 7
Successful : 7

2.2 FHST Updates:

Successful : 25

2.3 Operations Notes:

The SSR EDAC error counter was cleared once using ROP SR-1.

Per HSTAR 6963, there was FGS-1 servo movement at 033/041730Z during
an SAA boundary. At the time the star selector comp error A and B flagged
in and our of limits for 41 seconds. The FGS-1 stop flag and the search
radius limit both flagged out-of-limits. The following guide star
acquisition was successful, however.

The +E SPA trim realy was re-connected at 032/2141Z.

The STIS MCE-1 reset at 033/084650Z while the high voltage was on
and outside any SAA interval. HSTAR 6469 was written. STIS proposal 7389,
which occurs during the period of the next report, was executing. Per ROP
NS-12, the STIS flight software error counter was cleared at 033/0906Z.
MAMA-1 will be recovered at 034/115318Z via normal SMS commanding.
